Decline of our River Fisheries

It appears to me that the decline of our River Fisheries is going unchecked, there is almost total indifference. There are so many pressures on our river fisheries we are heading for an irretrievable situation. Clearly the private water companies don't care and the threats to river fisheries seems to be increasing.
Sewage, abstraction, silting, Mink & Cormorants, & now recently introduced Otters. Otters in particular will decimate fisheries targeting large fish particularly Bream. Did I read the other day about the introduction of Beavers???
What is the Angling Trust doing and as the largest Fishing Association in the Midlands what are the BAA doing about it, how can we halt this decline?

Re: Decline of our River Fisheries

Hello Frank,
Back on October 4th I put a post on the General Chat Forum “Water Pollution and Abstraction”that was in reply to a post that another member Rivernovice had posted on 13th September “Please sign this petition” that had Ten Replies it was to do with what you are posting about now.

The disgraceful way in which water utilities are abusing our water courses and pollution from many sources not being brought to justice by the Environmental Agency!

I had a reply from John Williams but my request for our Chairman to Sign it on Behalf of all of the Association Members was not how it is done. No offer to take it up and ask questions on our behalf was made as far as I know!

I have attached the post and reply for you to see in the attached

Re: Decline of our River Fisheries

There have been many petitions and such down the years, and they all come to nothing.
The reason? Almost no one cares. Pure and simple. The people that have the ability to change it also don't care, and never will.

We live in a capitalist society where the only thing that matters is money. Money, money, money.
It comes before everything else. A water company gives priority to paying its shareholders way before improving its practices.

Picture this; a wooded valley, full of trees, and wildlife abound. Lovely.
In the society we live in, it's worth NOTHING until it's cut down.

All this might sound harsh, but it's true.

Re: Decline of our River Fisheries

Which rivers do we think have declined?

It's true that our rivers are still far from pristine and indeed still suffer from the pressures other contributors state, but to nowhere near the extent that they used to be. Many river fisheries are now better than they have been at any point in living memory. Otters have not been introduced, they have multiplied and recolonised from strongholds where they have always been, because the environment is now cleaner (in respect of certain lethal pesticides such as DDT) and there are abundant fish stocks. Cormorants have spread inland from their coastal haunts for similar reasons.

Maybe some rivers aren't fishing as well as perhaps they did a few years back but if we look at the long term, things tend to be cyclical. Only salmon and eels have shown clear long-term declines on a national scale, and problems in the marine environment may be largely responsible for those.

Money is a key factor of course, and the water companies have spent billions in the past 20-30 years on a range of improvements and upgrades (though we should't forget it's actually our money - and our waste).

Re: Decline of our River Fisheries

I only pleasure fish so as far as certain fish go I have no idea.
Most of my fishing this year has been don on the Warwickshire Avon for me its fished better than I can remember nearly every outing has produced double figures.
The Roach are absolutely everywhere and small chub are showing which Ive not seen in years along with more perch than Ive ever seen on the river.
I hope to try the severn in the coming weeks and see what thats like.
I will say the Rive Teme never seemed to make a come back after 2007 but I am hearing reports of some barbel and chub being caught.
