Smudger - every Severn stretch has barbel, but the Lower river can be notoriously difficult to get going early season. You have both above and below Worcester options, Holt Fleet/Grimley/Hallow, and then Severn Stoke/Ripple etc further down. If you've never caught a barbel before, then the middle river is a better bet, but the Lower river might offer a bit more peace and quiet. Feeders/straight leads will work. Start with pellets, I use 10mm, but on the Lower you can get pestered with bream, so have 14 and 16mm options also, plus boilies/double boilies, and don't ignore meat either.

If you do concentrate on the Lower river, be prepared for blanks, and plenty of them, but it makes the successes far more rewarding.

Re: Help! First time on the River.

Hi Smudger, I live by the Lower Severn and WA, and as John says the Severn especially can be a very hard river to catch an early season Barbel, but they are there, it's just there is a lot of river to negotiate. One of the most enjoyable methods early season on the Lower is feeder fishing, if you use pellets as small as 8mm, with a feeder and keep the feed going in you will very often get the odd Barbel, the Roach especially will fall for a pellet. As will the Bream.

Personally I find a lighter approach in the summer months, a feeder rod or a quiver tip barbel rod will be a better choice. Last 'summer' the rivers were so high it was almost impossible to fish this way, this time it is very much on.

The Lower gives you more space, try Ripple, you can drive to your peg, and plenty to go at, and if the River is out of sorts you can always fish Mythe pool.. Remember you can night fish Ripple with a permit, and one angler a few years back had a 98lb Catfish...you never know.shades

A 98lb handsome Catfish, coming out of the darkness at night, on the eerie lower river.... I wouldn't sleep for months lol.
