Hi All,

I'm a new member this year from Canterbury down in Kent and have booked a weeks holiday in October to get some fishing in. We are staying at Chelmarsh (the Bulls Head) and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help out with a bit of info on the Barbel fishing in the area. Barbel fishing in my local river (the Stour) is all very much stalked single fish and the numbers are few and far between so its very light leads, single hookbaits etc etc. Now I know people wont wanna give away their marks etc but just a bit of advice would be nice. grin

Re: A little help?

You are in the right area to catch barbel, Bewdley to Bridgnorth is all prime water. It's difficult to give advice on where to fish in October because it's a transition period when a lot will depend on water levels and water temperature.

As a start I'd visit the tackle shops in the area and ask for advice, they usually know what is happening on a week to week basis.

If you raise your question again on here a week or two before your visit we can possibly give you a few pointers on the state of things at that time. Sorry I can't be more helpful but things do change quickly with extra water on the river.

Curry,
Thanks for the reply. I know we are quite a way off yet but was hoping to get a general sort of feel for the area. I figured being around Hampton Loade area I was on to a winner to start with (well fingers crossed anyway). I know it's not an ideal time of the year but I couldnt get away from the wife any earlier grin I will ask for advice closer to the time though.

Re: A little help?

Hampton Loade, Arley, Kinlet are all good Barbel area's. To be honest you can fish any of them on the right day and find fish.

At the moment the river level has dropped and that can make it hard to catch during the day, Put a couple of foot on the water and give it a bit of colour and it fishes better.

There's one thing for sure it will be different to what you are used to. Not much stalking goes on round here. Feeder and pellet at present doing the business for most anglers. You will need plenty of feeders as it's easy to lose them, sometimes 3 or 4 in a day. You also need different weight feeders to allow for water levels/current/swims.

Re: A little help?

IMO October is one of the best months of the year for barbel, provided there haven't been any hard frosts.

Though as others have said prevailing conditions and water levels can make a huge difference whatever the month.

The very best thing about this time of year is that many of the idiots have disappeared - the ones Johnny Care refers to as 'solar powered anglers'.

Less litter, less noise - more available pegs - I can't wait.

Re: A little help?

Meatman, sounds like my idea of heaven.

Like the "Solar Powered" anglers grin we suffer with them down on the Stour. The section outside Canterbury that holds Barbel is mainly quite narrow (10-15 yards across) gin clear, pretty gravel stream and the Noddies (our version of Solar powered's) just trash the place, open fires, rubbish everywhere and it is an absolute travesty.
