A local club are going to discuss if the OMC Magic Stick will be allowed on their waters at the next commitee meeting in September. Having just watched the OMC video on the device I hope it is banned as it appears to be a dreadful tether rig, should the mainline snap. Any thoughts on it,have I missunderstood how it is tied?

Re: OMC Magic Stick

if you go on youtube and type in OMC magic twig itll show you all you need to know
Basically its just another type of bold rig ,
its a inline spring loaded device that goes between you main line and hook length so when a fish pulls on your bait it shoots back a few inches hopefully hooking the fish for you ...
Will it work ??? maybe in some instance's but probably not in most .. its designed for mainly big carp anglers. who normally have there rods all on pods with beeper's set to wake them up and give them time to get out of a bivvie , run to the bank and strike (as with a lot of big fish you want the bite to develop.) i think that one pull on that and it will shoot back. and spook them off...but thats just what i think..
as for you saying if your main line breaks will it leave them tethered to a long length of line.?
well yes it will , but no more than when the main goes with any rig . This is why its always recommended to use a lighter hook link to main to stop that happening..
mainline snapping should never happen in a ideal world but unfortunately it does from time to time due to many factors , snags , tangles , rocks , age . to point out a few..
I don't know if they will be allowed to be used but i hope not ..

just my thoughts

Re: OMC Magic Stick

Just watched the OMC video again to confirm what I thought. The Magic Stick does indeed look like a grapling hook when triggered. Not ideal for a Carp to be towing round during the fight on weedy waters and a potential death trap should the mainline break.
That a reputable tackle company has produced and is selling this device makes me think I have missed something. Or have I? Don't think so.

Re: OMC Magic Stick

I dont think you have your right in thinking that once triggered there is 2 plastic prongs opening out and potential snagging up on everything if the main line is compromised..
im with you ,, i hope they are not allowed..

Re: OMC Magic Stick

I don't want to bore you by watching the video over and over .. but did you notice a that all but 1 of those carp were hooked before the trigger popped.. even the picture on the package they use to promote this item the trigger is still closed at the point of the photo snap and that fish was going frantic.
At the end of the day its just another bolt rig . which are banded at most venues..

Re: OMC Magic Stick

Just watched the video again(not all the way through),the two Carp I saw take the bait, turn and run, didn't trigger the device instantly,it obviously triggered during the fight.
What the Magic Stick will catch in huge numbers is ANGLERS who have, sadly,a "fish at any cost" mentality.
How long before it starts being used for Barbel? Probably already is.

Re: OMC Magic Stick

They're fish, not infants in swaddling.
Almost all the waters where it might be used are going to be barbless hooks only, so worst case scenario is the fish drags it about for an hour or two.

Re: OMC Magic Stick

Just watched the video and I couldn't even see the device trigger on the fish that they caught.
Seems as though the device needs such a high fish pull force to trigger it, that the fish would have bolt rig self hooked hooked before triggering.

I agree that any fixed bolt rig that breaks can leave the fish tethered.
