Hello Fellow d’anglers,
Me and my Good Lady took a trip to the the Staffs-Worcs Canal today to Swindon the venue of the b.a.a. forum d’anglers AC next contest.

The water is Gin Clear and in chatting to both Bob and Malcolm two of the Club d’anglers, they told me that no boats had been seen for some time?
As in their opinion when the boats go through the fishing improves, as it causes the silt to colour the water.
On checking the Canal and River Trust Website I have discovered that since the 30th August and until 06th October there are emergency repairs being undertaken on the Wolverley Court Locks #7 #8 that has closed the Navigation between Bridges 19 & 20

So on the date of our Contest 07th October the boats might be moving through our stretch, that is if the repair work is completed on the 06th October.

Anyway from my visit today I saw plenty of small fry being caught, from Gin Clear Water.

Keep on Fishing…

Hi Reg

Thanks for this heads up. I took note and parked up at the Lock Inn (Wolverley) yesterday lunchtime and seeing as when I last spoke to Rob Holland he recommended that I try the section above Br20 for a change as he'd found it to be more prolific than below, I took advantage of the no boats situation and had an above average afternoon's canal fishing. I was the Lone D'angler again as usual.

I had a bite a cast (double red maggot) for 5hrs. 64 fish in total. 39 perch (many between 6 and 9 ounce), 12 Gudgeon (a couple nearly an ounce a piece), 11 Roach between 2 and 4 ounce (not a Razor Roach amongst them), a lovely Dace which I weighed (5oz) plus the icing on the cake, a 3lb 10oz Chub.

Thanks Rob for the inspiration to try somewhere newsmiling

Well Done Stew,
Thanks for sharing the result of your trip to the S-W Canal, that was a nice net of fish that you caught above Wolverley.

Let us hope that we b.a.a. forum d’anglers AC members can enjoy as good a session next Saturday when we meet up at Swindon between Bridges 40 - 39.

See you next week

Keep on Fishing…

Hi all, Stew I think you have the wrong Rob I have never fished the stretch before last Saturday afternoon so I don’t want to claim someone else’s advice however that’s a nice bag of fish. I too caught a lot of small fish but I hooked into something rather large which stretched my no5 elastic to its limits before parting company with the hook .
Looking forward to catching up with everyone next week

The wrong Rob? I'll have to sort that out on Saturday then.smiling

I was geared up for the Chub anyway, after all a 14 hook on 3lb bottom was going to make it hard for any largish fish to escape, especially as I'd selected a peg with no snags along the far bank, but catching so many small fish on the same setup just proves how hungry the fish are at the moment.

Swindon is a different kettle of fish of course, but things look promising for all anglers where ever they fish at the moment. Water Temps have been a steady fish friendly @15*C for the past week or so. Long may that continue.

I told you to fish above the lock when we were chatting in the Swan at chaddesly ... the fishing is better because the next lock up stream is miles away so the towing is a lot less ..giving your presentation a lot smother ... below the lock its a bit manic at times as we all witnessed on our match in march .. boats open the pub lock and the canal toes.. then it comes passed and churns up the bottom , 5 minuets later it at the next lock so now its towing in the opposite direction... fishing in between locks is great in the winter when boats are a minimal . ( which is why i was so keen on the first match when it should of been at Christmas ).. either way , im glad you tried it and i can see you had a great day .. that's a lovely bag of fish im glad you posted it ..i only hope you can emulate it on Saturday.. im really looking forward to it..
Well done Stu .. a nice bag of fish..
GREAT bag of fish

Hi BIN

Good to hear your opinion again. I was very lucky to get the opportunity to fish it without any boats spoiling things.

Yes, I've fished the top end and middle of this section dozens of times (Whittington Lock down to the lower end of Caunsall) but parking always seemed to be the biggest problem for me to get to fish below Cookley without one hell of a walk, but that was until Keith established for us last year that the Lock Inn welcomes anglers, so fishing Br20 (above and below) has been a revelation for me this year with big perch and chub to target in both sections, which I've caught on odd occasions at Caunsall before but never on a regular basis like Wolverley. Every time I fish there I catch a big something or other.

Anyway our next D'anglers match will present us with the same lock/boat flow problem that the Wolverley match (below Br20) did back in March. Its also a short section between two quite deep locks so the current may well be rolling back and forth all day. A bit of a challenge for presentation as you've pointed out, so personally, I'm not expecting great weights, but hay-hoh, that's fishingsmiling .

Hi again

Having sampled the little known ales at both village pubs I've had a rethink. How's about the Hinksford Arms, which as you know is only 1 minute's drive out of Swindon and if other D'anglers join us who don't know the area like we do, they'll then know where we'll be meeting up for the following match on the 28th Oct. GOOD pints of HPA and Butty Bach to be had there. Might even drop in somewhere else for a pint of Bathams after toosmiling

Blimy BIN, for a Brummy you know all the Black Country pubs where I used to misbehave when I was younger (LOL). Was that why you joined the Blue Ball AC?

If you can park your BIG VAN anywhere near the Royal Exchange (Stourbridge), it would be a pleasure to accompany you so that I can apologise for my long absence to any of my old drinking pals that may still be alive and meet the new gaffersmiling

Hi Keith

As you know its only the early start and the fishing that spoils a good day out. If you're not working Saturday afternoon why don't you join us. A nice country walk on a sunny afternoon with the missus. Watch us lot (scoundrels) weigh in our dismal catches. Take the odd photo or two and join us for the craik and a nice pint on the way home. It'll give you chance to get the best out of what you started for us, the ever growing comradery between us regular members of your BAA D'anglers AC.

Come on down (please?)smiling

Hello Fellow d’anglers,
You know that the b.a.a. forum d’anglers Contest is getting close when THE Club Secretary sends us his best wishes, I can only reiterate the comments and thoughts of the members of the Club that YOU founded Keith, you are sorely missed.

Thanks to the Goodwill and generosity of bin, Stew and the rest of the lads we have a Club that pulls together and enjoy themselves at the contests irrespective of having caught or not.

So with only four days to go we will soon be fishing our 3rd Contest of Five.

See you on Saturday at Bridge 40.

Hi Reg

Let us also not forget the Good Will and Generosity of Meatman and his IT skills, who devoted time creating a match day spread sheet template for us despite not being able to join us for a while himself.

Here's hoping that "taking it easy" isn't driving you mad John and that you'll soon be up and running at full steam again.

So you've got a proper job Keith. That's a blow. We can't all be nine to fivers Monday to Friday of course otherwise the "World" would stop.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of you again on Saturday. It makes a pleasant change not to be the Lone D'angler on match days, even if the fishing so far has yet to be as good for me as when I'm on my own (LOL), but at least the company is better.smiling

Thanks Stew, I'm planning to send you an updated spreadsheet with Saturday's participants listed. Will get this over tomorrow. I feel fine and think I would be fine, but to be sure I need to avoid walks carting a load of fishing tackle for a while.

Therefore I'm going to target a few venues where I can park right next to a peg - probably Arley (the car park swims and Ribbesford (maybe the old tin shack peg!) on the Severn and Cleave Prior on the Avon.

I'm sure there's a few barbel with my name on them before the year's out.

Have a great match on Saturday guys.

John (Meatman).

Good Evening John,
I have just given myself a right royal Bol””””””g for not bringing your contribution that you make to the club by providing the documents to the attention of the rest of the club members.

It is very much appreciated John.

We are all looking forward to your return to our Contests, after your convalescence.

Keep on Fishing…
