Hi Baldyman, Whatnow, Bazpek, etc.

Haven't heard from you for ages.

Lest we forget. Any good news yet about the upper W. Avon's recovery or is it still looking pretty bleak? smiling

Re: Wasperton?

Stew, nothing good to report unfortunately. Haven't fished the BAA stretch for a while and looking at the overgrown pegs, not many people have. I have fished the LAA stretch lower down towards Hampton Lucy weir a few times with luncheon meat and/or hotdogs. Last fish caught? September 1st,4lb 15oz Chub on meat. Lost a very big Eel that took hotdog section on October 4th. Pike anglers are really struggling to get a run. Even people fishing maggots are struggling. Otters have been seen regularly,in daylight,I saw three on October 6th.
I'll keep fishing Wasperton, with fishing you never know what's going to pick up your bait. I have to admit though,it is bloody hard going with not even Crayfish having a nibble most sessions.
If anyone does decide to give it a go,be careful, the banks are overgrown and very slippery.
Tight lines(I wish)

Re: Wasperton?

Hi Baldyman

It sounds like the Otters have got used to the lack of anglers about and getting brave, mind you, they are probably finding the fishing hard too and having to put in extra hours. Do they eat Crayfish?

I'll have to have a session there one day. Apart from fishing a match at Hampton Lucy back in the 70s I've never fished that high up the Avon and really ought to.

Thanks for the update.smiling

Re: Wasperton?

Hardly any anglers on the bank and very few dog walkers along the river since a new stock fence was put up dividing the BAA and LAA waters. Otters do eat Crayfish and anything else they can catch and kill including ducks,Morehens,Coots. If it was the 70's,80's or even the 90's I'd say come and fish up here. 2023? I wouldn't bother,I live five minutes away and am having a look for somewhere else to fish not on the Avon. Otters,Cormorants and pollution have decimated what was once a fantastic stretch of river to fish,a very faint shadow of it's former self. Will it come back? Highly unlikely in the next 10-15 years even if action was taken now against the offenders responsible for it's tragic decline.

Hi again Baldyman

It seems that your observations have painted an accurate picture for us, the proof being that having read Steve Cope's round up of last week's matches on the C&RT website, a mere 3oz was the top weight on the Leamington water at Wasperton.

Pretty dire isn't it.confused

With Welsh Water Admitting today (19/10/23) after being investigated by journalists that they have been illegally dumping Sewage for Years!

ALL of these Water Utilities have really been taking the P”””

But it is NO Laughing matter when our Rivers and their unique ecosystem’s have been destroyed!

Re: Wasperton?

A post on the LAA facebook page a week or so ago, from the group of anglers that test the water at Stratford found.....
Massively high levels of ecoli and fecal matter. High enough to be a serious health risk to anyone using the water for swimming, paddle boarding etc. That was when the river was at normal Summer levels during a dry spell. With all the rain we are getting and rising river levels the sewage works are going to to be dumping everything. Again. Legaly.

Re: Wasperton?

Fished lower LAA water at Wasperton for four hours, on October 26th. Meat or hot dog on the hook, fed small pieces of the same. Tried big baits, small baits, static, trundling the bottom, free lined in the flow, near bank, mid river and far bank weed line. Not a twitch, not even a Crayfish nibble.
All the blanket weed has gone and didn't see the Otters,I suspect they have moved on. Replaced by the regular Winter influx of Cormorants.
Going to fish the BAA water next time,I have a theory(probably wrong) that fish pushed downstream during the polution incident, have relocated back upstream. Or been eaten by Otters.
