What can people tell me about the fishing at 'Fladbury Below' please?

I've not been to Fladbury below the bridge for 30+ years when i used to throw a waggler over to the boat/stages a couple of pegs down from the bridge and catch a few chub.

I note that it's popular these days, with good access and frequently booked/fished, so there must be plenty of people that know all about it.

Does anyone know which pegs are considered the 'good ones'?
Any specific areas noted for barbel, bream, roach/chub/perch etc?
Any other tips for that particular section please?

Many thanks and tight lines!

Hi Mork,
Have a look on the Images link in Where to Fish - Avon - Fladbury.

There are 44 images with notes on on most of them giving the methods of capture of the variety of species that have been caught.

The Fisheries Team have been busy down there this last year repairing and replacing the fishing stages.

The last time I fished there, I was lure fishing for the Pike, but there were a few d’anglers having a few fish out on the Stick float to Casters and Maggots, as were the d’anglers feeder fishing.

So let us know how you get on Mork

Keep on Fishing…

Thanks Reg. I'd already looked and seen all those nice barbel & pike pictures + a bream & carp.

The problem is that reviews don't distinguish between the 2 venues except some mention above bridge at weir area for barbel. There's only a couple that mention below the bridge and the last peg.

Although you can technically catch a barbel off 'any peg', my experience is that you're either on them peg or not a chance, hence does anyone have any more specific info on the downstream swims please and what fish to target on which swims please?

Mork, I think the lack of response is telling you that you need to fish the venue yourself rather than look for short cuts to success.
And when you do catch a barbel, make a mental picture of the exact swim in your mind - but don't tell anyone else. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Barbel travel up to 8 miles a day, so anywhere between Tewkesbury and Barton would be good.
But I have fished these pegs a few times and they are equally good, or bad depending, but look for a 'bird cage'...'nuff said.angry

JW - thanks for your response but I don't expect everyone to rush and answer my question within 3 hours

You may have misinterpreted my query. I'm explicitly asking about 'below the bridge' and what fish you may expect to catch in what area of that section only.

The reference to barbel was in response the gallery pictures & comments predominantly barbel orientated, mainly above the bridge & weir area, whilst I'm asking about what species I may expect to find below the bridge and it what swim areas.

The reason for my question is that I have a match there in a few weeks (1st river match over 30 years) and it may help to know what bait and approach depending on the area I draw. If I do draw an area noted for a specific species, whether it be barbel, chub, bream, roach , whatever, it would be useful to know please?

OLC - thanks but I think that you may have also got caught up in the JW misunderstanding.
I'm not specifically looking for a peg for targeting barbel on an 8 mile stretch. I'm only asking about Fladbury below and what areas are noted for what species on that stretch only.

Not sure about the cryptic 'bird cage' but i'm sure there are others that do understand. Can I assume by the barbel misdirection, that somewhere at Fladbury below there's an area where you can see a bird cage and it's noted for barbel please?

it's a very mixed species stretch, expect anything, incl the odd Barbel. I love using a light quiver approach with a maggot feeder. Boats will be a pain, so think margins.
Bird cage describes the limited/tight nature of the peg ....that's all.
Reminds me of when I lived in the Cotswoldl Water Park a regular visiting angler brought everything in his camper including Pedro the pet parrot.
Carry on....as you were on this forum.confused

Hi mork, fished there a couple of weeks back i tried maggots and casters on the float and plenty of fish but very small but I switched to 4/6mm halibut pellets on the waggler and had some quality roach to a pound and half, be prepared for pike though if you do get them going all the best.

with the new access to below jubilee bridge as you approach the river you have the option of turning left or right ... turn left towards the bridge and on the opposite bank you will see some wooden landing stages.. those 2 pegs hold a lot of chub.. feeder fishing is you best attack maggot and groundbait as close to them far stages as you can , as the chub shoal beneath them .. on saying that , there is a good bag of silver fish on the stick float line to be had, small but often feeding will bring you Dace Chub Roach all day long.. but as someone already said , be aware you will lose some fish to pike ..
i was lucky enough to land one last year 12lb ( and that was on the pole)
a merry dance that was..

Good luck ...... keep us informed if you can

Re: What can people tell me about the fishing at 'Fladbury Below' please?

OLC - many thanks - so no pegs noted for bream shoals or barbel then. That's good because I prefer a small silvers match so I don't need to make the 'double or bust' decision.

Rob - thanks - pretty normal fishing then but I didn't realise people were targeting bigger roach on halibut pellets or is what came along whilst targeting barbel? I remember using tares for big roach years ago.

Bin - thanks - I think those landing stages may be the ones I referred to in the 1st line of my OP (maybe 2 or 3 pegs below the bridge from memory). Good to see the chub are still there.

I'll put the results up but the match is not for another month yet.

Hi mork, I did accidentally catch some quality roach while I was after barbel on the Severn a few years ago,I’m convinced they mistake the dark halibut pellets for hemp and tares but l put the hook directly into the band instead of hair rigging I find I hit more bites

Re: What can people tell me about the fishing at 'Fladbury Below' please?

Mork - two meadows, the upstream is shallower and pacier than the one downstream. There's a peg, maybe two, directly below the bridge, but then a section of river where there's lots of cabbages and lilies close in due to the shallow nature of the river; there'll be fish there, but almost impossible to fish.

It becomes fishable again halfway down the first field, where the pace slows down as it approaches the second field, which is deeper and slower. Barbel can be, and are caught anywhere along the stretch. People will probably tell you that the very last, downstream peg is best, and it is good, but only produces more barbel because more people fish it. It did a 14.1 barbel last season, and it's done a chub of 6.10 also. The other species are also present, roach, chub, and there's no shortage of pike either.

JC - many thanks for your detailed reply. I think there's only expected to be 14 turn up, so maybe enough pegs to leave out the cabbage patch.

So, no mention of bream pegs by anyone sad . I realise that you can't guarantee anything in fishing, but would you be inclined to bias your fishing towards barbel on the bottom pegs or are they just not caught frequently enough on any particular pegs to make it worth trying on a match?

Hi Mork,

Just to let you know that I've fished this venue on and off for about 50 years, and it is still a fairly consistent part of the Avon.Albeit the old flyer peg is now completely covered by reeds. The peg that caught 70 or 80lbs of chub, is non existent.
So far this year, I have fished 4 different pegs. 2 in the upstream meadow and 2 in the downstream one. Me being a float only man, 90% of the time a stick float, using hemp and tares. A fair number of roach from each peg, plus the obligatory pike or 3.
Maggots or caster if you fancy bleak bashing!
Personally I have only ever float-caught one barbel, and talking to others it's not a barbel prolific venue. The same goes for bream.
Last word: The landing stages are absolutely splendid. The BAA have done a brilliant job.
