Just done a quick count of the lack of comments on here vs views, its quite staggering really, 1700 views on 6 threads with not one reply, the average is one reply in a 4 to 500 view.
There were some lively discussions around fencing, that died a death, I even did some quick votes to Admin...no response.
Reg is good and does his thing to try and stimulate some hope, but alas ...

Re: Hello..is anyone there?

Hi
1LC
I agree with your analysis about the replies to views.

Is it that our membership is now to frightened to respond in fear of wokeness or snide comments?
Or are our members not able to reply due to technophobia?

I am cracking on for 70 but I was fortunate in my latter years at work to have to learn and use technology, which I am eternally grateful for.

However our Members may be replying but the messages are not being displayed?

I personally have had posts removed and when I asked the question why, I did not get any answer?

I shall continue to add posts that I believe are of interest or relevance to try and encourage healthy debate.

In the meantime

Keep on Fishing

Re: Hello..is anyone there?

Your'e right. though particularly of late there have not been a lot of posts on here to reply to, plenty of people do obviously read them though. I post / reply occasionally but often feel I can't add anything of note, sometimes just what people post says it all. Main thing is people read them.

Re: Hello..is anyone there?

Not been a lot is a understatement, but possibly folk are reluctant to post, personally I have or had the highest count, but the replies on a great many have been very caustic at times. What is a good debate often decends into name calling and the very least sacasism, and from Admin, which sets a very poor example.
Example being the Otter fencing thread, some good constructive comments and then nothing, died a death, like the Carp being preyed upon. Surely BAA should welcome such input, its not having a pop, its the membership getting involved.
All very odd, well done Reg, you deserve better...grin

Re: Hello..is anyone there?

Hi lads

You might have known that I'd pop up again with my bad spelling.

Let's not forget that "views" include members of the public who are not BAA members (yet) and its only the minority of members who are passionate about their fishing.
Being 66yrs old now I've been a BAA member on and off for most of my life, that depended on how much spare time I had to fish cos there are times in your life when pleasures like fishing have to be put on hold.
After not fishing for the best part of 8yrs recently I started again in July 2019 which was the first time that I encountered this web site. I only registered to join this forum this time last year when I'd become so intent on fishing once a week, no matter what time of year. Fishing had become my passion for life again.

Its been good to share and I am grateful for the input that I've had from others on this forum. Things will liven up again I'm sure. In the meantime there's some serious canal & pool fishing to be done with barbless hooks thanks to Peachy telling me how best to hook the maggots (works too Peachy, thanks mate).

Do spend a midweek afternoon down Hinksford Reg, when its quiet and you've got the place to yourself, its well worth the trip if only for the occasional quality Breamsmiling

Re: Hello..is anyone there? - Yes it’s me again - Keep on Fishing.

Hello Fellow D’Anglers,
We are now about half way through our enforced removal from the River Banks for the Close Season, so not long to go now till we can fish on the “Running Water”.
So to while away the time I have been reviewing the Forums.

Just an update on the activity on the Forums
We have SIX Forums and I shall list them below as they appear on the web page with the number of Topics each forum has generated and the number of messages they have generated and my quantification of messages to Topics.

FORUM. TOPICS. MESSAGES. QUANTIFICATION
Announcements. 43. 154. 3.58
General Chat. 522. 3829. 7.33
Fishing Chat. 611. 3809. 6.23
Juniors. 7. 32. 4.57
Match Fishing. 202. 443. 2.19
What you have caught. 150. 487. 3.24

The BAA Forum posts originated back in May 2015 since then the Forums has generated 10 Topics per page the following number of pages per Forum.
Announcements has 5 pages
General Chat now has 53 pages
Fishing Chat has 62 pages
Juniors is All on One Page with only 7 Topics!
Match Fishing Only has 21 pages
What you have caught has 15 pages

Time to

Re: Hello..is anyone there?

Reg, your careful analysis confirms what any regular forum reader can see:
• Response levels are in largely determined by the topic (General/Fishing Chat are much more likely to generate responses than say Match Fishing and What You Have Caught where most comments will be of the ‘well done’ variety)
• Most contributions and responses are of the general/fishing chat variety which by its nature should promote a variety of views, contributions and challenges than other topics. This should be the main function of the forum, promoting exchanges among the members (and others).
• Few juniors use the forum (it might be that they use alternative media but the BAA Facebook page seems to generate even less activity).

What your analysis cannot show is the average age of contributors (my guess is that it is 50+), or the proportion of BAA members who have ever engaged with the forum (my guess is that it is no more than 1-2%). I sense also that the contribution rate was declining fairly slowly between 2015 and 2020; with the pandemic it increased as people wanted to know what was happening and we had ‘covid rage’ about the loss of fishing, staying local, rule breaking etc etc.

As matters have eased the activity has settled to a new low. This is sad as the forum is a mechanism to bind the membership together, to engage the potential clout the BAA has (by virtue of size and geographical area) to work for the future of angling in the UK. It should also be a source of information dissemination (the recent exchanges re EVA bait systems being a good example).

The BAA is like any other club, society or interest group. People join to pursue the interest. Few want to ‘get involved’. Over the last 30 years we have become a less united, less community based society where the influence of ‘the market’ has encouraged us to participate on ‘a pay as you go’ basis and loyalty and commitment ties have become more fragmented.
