Hello Fellow d’anglers,
Just seen this announcement posted today by the BAA Admin.

Electro fishing of canals

The Canal & River Trust will be carrying out electro fishing for the removal of non-native fish species from the canal network this winter.

Our fisheries contractor (MEM Fisheries) will be undertaking the works on our behalf. The works will commence from the end November 2021 through to the end of March 2022.

The works will be undertaken on the Worcester & Birmingham canal, Coventry canal, Birmingham & Fazeley canal and Trent & Mersey canal and will include waters in which your club controls the fishing on.

As I fish the B'ham / Worcester canal what are they taking out, I assume zander, not that I have ever caught one. I hope for every fish they take out they put one back in.

The C&RT are literally destroying the sport of half the people I see fishing the canals.
While they can't legally return non-natives if they are caught in fish surveys, there is absolutely no requirement for the C&RT to be systematically electro fishing the canal network.
This raises the question of why are they doing it on BAA waters, and can they be asked to stop?

Totally agree KenL. The electro fishing will affect fish behaviour for a while afterwards and any contests booked are likely to suffer once the contractors have moved through

Re: More Electro Fishing of Canals where BAA have waters - 08th Nov-2021

As a course fisherman I have no interest in Zander.

Im sorry that the C&RT are removing them for me personally its a good thing, at the end of the day they were illegally stocked into uk waters and shouldn't be there.

From my fishing on the Trent and Mersey canal this year just outside Litchfield all I can see is that the canals are stuffed with pike and huge perch ive never seen so many predictors.

From what I can gather the electro fishing is to establish just how far the zander have spread through out the canal network.

Carl and his team have finished their fish survey and electro fished all of our 4/5 miles of canal from Kings Bromley down to Fradley junction. Gratefully Carl has been able to supply our club with information regarding locations, areas of all our fish stocks, which we are very thankful for.

Some areas contain very few fish almost void of fish altogether which is shocking.

Other areas contain huge numbers of pike and perch and prey fish.

While other parts of our waters that we very rarely fish came up with some amazing results.

Over 50 large chub in one area we didnt even know about while other areas showed up large bream and large numbers of silver fish.

Oh and only 4 Zander removed from our waters so they have not migrated up from fradley junction in many numbers.

ATB Dave.

Hello Dave
That is a really informative account of what the electro-fishing revealed about the fish stocks and composition in the stretch of canal that your club has.

It would be really useful to know IF the same feedback was provided to the BAA Admin on the waters that the BAA has the fishing rights for?

I hope to attend the AGM tonight and I shall ask the question when the AGM Minutes have been read and the AOB allows questions.

Keep on Fishing

Re: More Electro Fishing of Canals where BAA have waters - 08th Nov-2021

From our clubs point of view the involvement with Carl and his team has had nothing but positive results. We are now looking to put a few knock ups and club matches on the areas we now know hold a lot of fish.

We do have quite a few predator fishermen who buy season tickets for our water but they seem happy catching the pike and large perch in our Armitage stretch.

Im sure if the Baa were to ask Carl for some feed back on certain waters that they control or waters of interest to members they would get some good feed back.

took me an age to find a decent stretch of canal that gave me chance to catch a few zander not far from home and now they are going to remove em, not sure ill be renewing my baa card next year. i may join the lure angling club on the grand union instead.

"We do have quite a few predator fishermen who buy season tickets for our water but they seem happy catching the pike and large perch in our Armitage stretch".

This is a problem. This comes across as very elitist and dismissive. It is basically saying that pike and perch are good enough for the predator fishermen who buy season tickets for our water.

One wonders how the river fishermen who buy tickets would feel if the non-native barbel were being removed from the Severn, Avon, Teme and Wye, only to have it noted that they seem to be quite happy catching chub and roach...

Re: More Electro Fishing of Canals where BAA have waters - 08th Nov-2021

Hope you all realise what is happening here.

C&RT who have instructed and contracted MEM (a company who John Ellis has a vested interest in) to removed the Zander and sell them to the fish market down in London (Billingsgate), they did the same last year on the run up to Christmas on the T&M and Ashby canals as well as the Oxford canal I believe.

Also watch out for other fish they remove, as they have been known to do this as well, transferring them to other waters, this has been caught on video late last year early this year, it is an eye opener.

Ask C&RT about the crayfish and what they are doing about them, mention to them how Zander if left alone would help to control the crayfish and also control the small Zander so a balance is maintained by nature, you will not get a response.

I have never seen so many silver fish as there are on the Birmingham and Fazeley canal, the issue is that when they MEM electro fish they will be missing the small Zander, these are the fish that will cause issues with silver fish as there is only one predator that will control them, that being the pike, as the big Zander have been removed.

Sorry to say folks that the Midlands canals are just fish farms, the C&RT couldn’t give two hoots to the anglers, they are interested in money and that is the bottom line.

Funny thing is I had my renewal for my BAA card come through yesterday, what’s the point?

Im a member of the Lure Anglers Canal Club and Tusses and theses two clubs have stretches of Grand Union, south Stratford and Coventry canals all of withch have Zander, pike & Perch in large numbers but thay are also cramed full of Roach Bream, Rud carp and in places large Chub. So i think if the CRT leave the canals alone and stop Electro fishing them the canals will find a natural balance and then every body will be happy.

Will be interesting to see the match results pre and post 'survey'. I noted there are a couple scheduled just before and if its anything like last year then people might as well avoid it for a month or so after. The comment above regarding their illegal stocking is unfounded as they are classed as naturalised in both the Severn, Avon and Trent, all of which conect to the canal network I some way.. At least this time round as members we have been notified and therefore have it within our power to be on hand to witness any fish removal. I noted in last years thread that 'no other fish were removed' but as far as I'm aware no one actually witnessed this, we only have the word of the contractors themselves.

The following was received recently from Carl at CRT:

Hi John,
Following on from the below email. The following details are when we expect our electro fishing works to pass through your clubs waters.

Please note that these are of course not set in stone, and should we have urgent or emergency works or extreme weather conditions then days will be re arranged. I’ll update you with as much notice as possible of any changes as and when they may occur.

Monday 29th November – Trent & Mersey canal from Fradley to Burton
Monday 6th December – Coventry canal from Fradley to Huddlesford
Monday 13th December – Worcester & Birmingham canal from Worcester to Offerton
Tuesday 14th December – Worcester & Birmingham canal from Offerton to Hanbury
Wednesday 15th December – Worcester & Birmingham canal from Hanbury to Astwood
Thursday 16th December – Worcester & Birmingham canal from Astwood to Stoke Pound
Friday 17th December – Worcester & Birmingham canal from Tardebigge to Kingsnorton

We will be electro fishing some waters more than once over the course of the winter. Once I have dates and locations for the New year, I’ll contact you again to let you know of any on your clubs waters.

Kind regards

Hope the BAA have representatives on the bank when these “contractors” take the fish out, it has been proven that other fish have been removed, say goodbye to your pike, carp and big perch.
