Fished it for first time last week, looked bang on with some cloud, but didn’t have a touch trying worm, maggots and bread. Went onto peg 1 and had brown trout about 1lb - anyone else finished it,as very strange session.

Re: River stour

Stourton castle has been tough for a few years now, personally I blame otters as it used to be full of quality roach.

Re: River stour

Agree with previous comment - I live close by but the last few times I have tried it I have caught nowt, whereas a few years back there was a decent head of roach. The river looks lovely here and it is perfect for trotting, but I am pretty sure that there are very few resident fish left. This is the furthest point upstream on the Stour where fish have a foothold, I have not heard of or seen any sign of fish life upstream in Wordsley, Stourbridge etc. There are plans and projects such as "Salmon in the Stour" which aim to boost all fish populations in the river. It would be interesting if the BAA were to carry out some stocking of the river at Stourton. The weir upstream at Prestwood has been removed and any newly stocked fish would have the opportunity to migrate upstream and eventually repopulate those areas.

Re: River stour

Thinking back to when the stourbridge canal burst, emptying its contents into the river, the stour had a massive influx of fish from the canal, was this the cause of the bumper years 10 years ago?
Reckon there's always been a descent fish population around wordsley/stourbridge wether the otters have decimated the stocks now is another story.

Re: River stour

It's disappointing that the Stour in that area is fishing poorly, but the suggestion of restocking is a good idea, but it is not the responsibility of the BAA . I would think that falls in the lap of the Environment Agency. At present I doubt they would carry out that task unless there was a serious pollution. It is my personal opinion that otters are a big contributor to the decline in fish stocks especially in rivers and pools and I know from a good source that certain areas of the canal system are suffering the same problems. As if we haven't got enough problems with certain people taking fish illegally for the table.

Ollie I have to agree with you, makes me think there was no thought or proper planning when they re-introduced otters certainly no consideration for us anglers. I don’t think there’s a stretch of river that hasn’t got them now , my last two trips to Eardington I’ve seen them and I’ve never seen them there before. And poaching is probably much worse than we think it is.
