You may or may not have read about his in the "news" section of the site.
I've read the description, I've been on their website, and I'm still utterly clueless.
Surely I'm not alone in this.

Re: what3words

What bit are you struggling with Ken?

W3W is an app you download on your phone. Once you've got the app you can search for a location such as middle severn angling, for a 3 word description such as "joyously.riverbank.soil", or tap on the map to set the location. The 3 word description of that location is displayed in the search/description bar at the top. You can then use the buttons at the bottom of the page to share your location e.g. so your mate knows what peg you're in, navigate using W3W or Google maps, or save it as a favourite, so you can get back to the same place.

It's basically just a postcode but pinpoint rather than an area, which works well in the countryside when postcodes can span huge areas. Also where the postcode takes you to the wrong side of the river W3W does not.

Re: what3words

Sounds awful.
Does it rely on an internet connection? - because I can list the number of BAA venues where I can access data on my tablet on one hand.

Re: what3words

I have used it, and must say I’m very impressed - but as Ken said has its drawbacks.

When I get settled at a venue I send my Mrs my location via W3W, much easier than trying to explain where I am as she wouldn’t have clue anyway ! At least I could be found if I needed help.

Re: what3words

it uses GPS to locate were you are , so no need for internet signal
only problem would be you could be stuck in middle of nowhere . and cant use phone to call for help etc ...... but you would know exactly where in the world you are .

Not much in this world is perfect, although a lot of the time, we expect modern wizardry to be!

Re: what3words

Ken.

Chris has done a good explanation and the BAA could have explained better...

Sit in your living room and type into your phone 'what3words', then enter. Maybe look at youtube too.

You will see it opens up a map and there's a square drawn above your roof living room (above where you are sitting). That's far closer than typing in your postcode on google maps and it pointing to a place 20 houses away!

Now, lets consider that you want to fish in the middle of nowhere and the nearest house is half a mile away (similar to the error between BAA postcodes and the carpark). If you knew the 'what3words' you'd know where to go (within 3 metres).

Now find a place where you want to go (either by zooming in the map and clicking the square or knowing the 3 words and entering them). Then press navigate. It will then give an option of what navigation app to use. Most people use google and sometimes connect with 'android play' to the car. You can then use the navigation to direct you to that 3m square. If your still not sure, ask a teenager.

It's already been mention but the data is hardly used. Most of that little data is used on the initial search (you can do it linked to your wifi). From then on it's 99% GPS. Me & my colleagues now use what3words to identify the actual pegs we have fished to 3m accuracy. It's fantastic.

Lets run an example...
BAA says Mythe Farm on the Avon is at GL20 6AA. look on google Maps and it will draw a symbol and direct you to a bridge on the river Severn. See 1st pic attached.

Then try what3words 'blazing.wharfs.trickles' and it will show the BAA carpark. see 2nd pic.

Now for the best part, click Navigate and it will navigate you to the BAA car park even though it doesn't have a postcode. See 3rd pic.

Now lets say that you are somewhere and don't know how to explain to someone who needs to know. Use the App, then press 'share' and whatsapp them the link. They then have your location and can navigate to you (within 3m), so they could find you in the middle of a forest in the licky hills or something.

I don't know why the BAA haven't put all the what3words locations on their maps. It would only take someone at the BAA around a day to do so. They say on the news section "As the Fisheries team visits each of our BAA fisheries, they are recording the what3word location reference for the fishery (usually the car park). These 3 word references are then being added to the BAA website Where to Fish pages", but they don't need to, which probably means they don't understand it themselves. Someone who knows the locations could simply jump on the PC, zoom into the what3words map, and click the carpark. It would then display the what3words location (without needing to visit the location).

Re: what3words

It is great but make sure you click the compass symbol to get where you are before sharing. Had few issues telling people where I had been not where I was going lol
