I fished Pensham the other day (8th February) and caught my biggest ever chub. Been fishing for over 45 years and this is my biggest.
Used a 3 gramme crowquill avon to size 22 barbess with 1.4 line and single bronze maggot.
Took about 15 minutes to get it into the net.
Absolutely chuffed to bits!
The attached photo was the best I could do as I was on my own.

Well done Peachy, nice fish using a traditional method. Size 22 barbless as well!

Hornyoldtoad, you are right. One of my homemade floats.
Are you the fellow that I gave one to at Pensham a few weeks back?
I've still got lots more to give away!

Re: My biggest chub

Well done to you Peachy,

That is a beauty of a Chub.

From what I have read you are from the Kevin Ashurst / Billy Lane school of float fishermen.
I remember reading that KA only carried a selection of Quills.

He then adapted the size of the quill to the meet the need of the swim he was fishing.

So fair play to you, rigged up to fish at any distance and depth with your 3oz quill, but then presented as fine as possible got you a PB Chub on a size 22 to a 1.4lb line is a true angling skill.

Keep on Fishing

Yes Peachy, well done, it would be nice to know what you recon it weighed though or even a guestimate of its length..

Another question to ask you as well is what is the trick to attaching maggots to small barbless hooks so that they don't wriggle off?

I don't like using barbed hooks any time but habitually do when float fishing with maggots and they are a pain to remove when a disgorger is necessary. Your reply would be much appreciated please. Ta! smiling

Re: My biggest chub

Hi Stew
I should have stated in my first mail that I weighed it at 6lb dead, including the weighing net, so probably about 5lb 12ozs.
The length I would estimate at about 24inches or so
Regards hooking maggots onto hooks, I always gently squeeze the pointy end so that the blunt end
pops out a bit into which I hook into. It's always worked for me! I never use barbed hooks.

Re: My biggest chub

Hi peachy,

wasn’t me you gave a float to, wish it was… as they seem to work!!

You mentioned on a old post you were going to try some homemade 6-8grm avons at nafford a year ago or more, I did send you a email asking how you got on with them as I’m making floats myself!

Been watching mark wintle on you tube, he makes his avons with hollow pole float tips 3-4mm, I’m doing the same with cane and alloy stems, would a 4-8 grm set be right for the deep water below Evesham?

Got a load of questions I could ask you!! Well done again!

Re: My biggest chub

Hi Roger
I cannot recollect posting about 6-8 gramme Avons at Nafford, nor did I receive an email from you.I certainly would have replied to it. In my opinion a 6-8 gramme one would be far too heavy for Nafford, as it's fairly slow moving. 3-4 is ideal. Generally crowquill Avons equate to about 3BB per gramme, so a 6-8 gramme would be somewhere around 18-24BB. Rather a lot!
Not sure how to go about getting email addresses from this forum, but if you care to send me your address I will send you a couple of my homemade crowquill Avons. My email is pp9948@gmail.com.
Regarding your question on the Avons you are making, I cannot really say, as my experience is only with genuine crowquill Avons, rather than bolo type floats.
Good luck with your float making and feel free to ask me any questions.

Re: My biggest chub

WOW! What a clonker of a chub. Must be worthy of "picture of the week" next week.

Thank you so much for the advice on maggots and barbless hooks too. I will follow your example from now on.

Many thanks too for your post. Its raised a lot of interest for many of us, which is unusual for the "What you've caught" section.

Cheers
