Re: Rolling baits for barbel

Beware! I think you have to be very selective where you deploy this method, it's ideally suited for fast glides over beds of smooth gravel, but these are few and far between on the Severn. n most pegs if your bait rolls it usually rolls straight into a snag where you'll lose at least your hook and often any other terminal tackle you have on!

Safest way to fish for barbel on Severn or Teme is to find a clear, snag free spot and nail your bait in it. Float fishing does work of course, and though prone to the same problems as rolling baits, you can sometimes ease your bait over the snag once you have located it, or them.

Best of luck anyway. There are some areas where this could be fun.

Re: Barbel Advice

Best of luck with your venture! I live within walking distance of the river, fish the river thirty times a season and I doubt I've caught a hundred barbel in the last FIVE years!

I fish a variety of methods, but I have had my best catches (6-8 fish in a short three hour session) on meat when the river is high, warm and coloured.

I love floatfishing maggot and caster for barbel but the sheer numbers of tiny dace, bleak, minnows and chublets make it difficult to get through to the big fish.

Pellets can produce when the water is low to medium but the barbel are pretty wise to them as they are so extensively used. Whilst barbel are caught during the day, evenings are best, often the only fish of the session comes as I'm starting to pack up in failing light.

Whilst you can't rule out any swim for producing barbel in the summer months, the streamier swims are the best bet, the bigger barbel like a bit of depth as well, and if there is overhead cover too, all the better.

Good news is that they can be caught throughout the season, odd ones even turn up when the river is low, clear and cold in winter, though I tend to go for the chub when it's that cold.

Northwood Padlock

Visited Northwood (Bewdley) today (Sat 24th) but found that the lock is jammed. Two of us had a go at it but the prongs would only come out so far and we couldn't get the lock off. I suspect someone has put something in the lock to stop us getting into the car park. By the look of it someone else had already tried the lock before we arrived as it was on the correct combination of numbers. So until the lock is replaced or repaired, members can't access the fishery as there isn't really any safe parking on the road.

Re: New River Season

I've had a couple of short evening sessions at Arley, fishing stickfloat and maggot, modest nets of small chub, perch and good dace up to around 6oz. No sign of barbel but very enjoyable nevertheless and thanks to BAA fishery management team for clearing the pegs.
