Retreat Farm Tench?

Thinking of taking a ride over to Retreat Farm on Friday and having a day's tench fishing on Pool 2, maybe a few crucians too! What's the average size of the tench in there and what baits work best?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Retreat Farm Tench?

Hi, see earlier posts, everyone I speak to that's fishing pool 2 says the same - not a bite !! I have tried it 3 times since the pools were re opened. Not a bite. It was OK before the closure due to the top mouth Gudgeon, on a good day you could catch 25 Carp plus 1 Tench. Numbers wise I don`t think there are many. Went on pool 1 yesterday, loads swimming around but reluctant to feed. Had 2, about 8 fished, most blanked.

Thanks Wilkes. Shame it (Pool 2) seems to fish so poorly as the photo's make it look like a lovely place to go and fish. Been keen on bagging a new Tench PB (previous PB is about 2lb from Woodland View years ago) this year and thought Retreat might be the place to try first.

Fished pool 2 a couple of times last season and like everyone else seem to experience, blanked. Spoke to a few guys on pool 1 who all said that they do not know anyone to have a bite on it. Yes it is a very inviting looking place to while away a few hours, but a fish or a bite at least would be very nice.

It's a bit pathetic if there's no fish in the pool and we're paying for membership (when we can fish!)
It's states that pool 3 is awaiting stocking, seems to be a good idea maybe they'll stock pool 2 as well......

Agree there Stew, but surely sorting out the otter predation problem should be first on the list? After all, what is the point of restocking if the fish are just going to get eaten before anglers can get to catch them? If nothing is done, then eventually the same fate will befall Pool 1 as well over time.

Let's be honest there aren't many venues at the moment that are not affected by otters, rivers, pools even canals there's no easy answer unfortunately.

The thing that separates us from primitive hunter gather societies is the fence as a means of protecting stock and crops.
We've had this most basic technology for thousands of years and without it, managing stock without losses to predators would be impossible.
Sun powered machines that go "ping" are all well and good but a well maintained fence is cheaper, less prone to vandalism, more effective and it works when the sun don't shine....

I seem to recall the baa saying they couldn't afford to fence similar venues, so that's probably not going to happen. Are the otter deterrent things still working at retreat or did they get pinched?

Define "working"...
Last time I was there, they were still in situ but I think they were acting as a dinner bell.

Re: Retreat Farm Tench?

Went again Friday, fished pool 1, not even a line bite !! I have a feeling the fish aren`t there any more. Saw half a dozen splash down wind of the island and one took one piece of bread close in. I`ve fished here since the pools became available and watched the fish grow from the initial 3 - 3 1/2lb to double figure. My best were last October at 10lb, 11lb & 12lb (weighed). But the last few times have been disappointing. On the question of otters I normally stay to the end, often alone, and have never seen one. There were another 3 fishing Friday, all blanked.

Noticed similar at nordley, that declined in the 4 consecutive years I fished, not been since 2017 so could be empty by now! Don't know wether its otters or poachers.

Nordley....that place is a joke.....I only fished it once . Never again....we had a club match there last year and 80% blanked.... pool 2 I think, it looks beautiful but no fish ...I personally ended up fishing one of my canal rigs ..22 hook and a 0.6 bottom just to try and get a bite ......not a chance .....

Re: Retreat Farm Tench?

Had a walk round retreat Sunday, no one fishing pool 2 but there were 4 or 5 herons having a look, Considering that the waters gin clear at the moment I reckon they're catching a few, pool looks quite weedy too. Didn't see any otters but a few cormorants flying around.
Anybody know if pool 3 has been stocked yet?

Sounds like Retreat Farm is finished. I don't think I'll bother this year. My dad will be upset though, he enjoyed our sessions there.

Re: Retreat Farm Tench?

Many of you will remember the BAA's finest of all stillwater venues - Walcot. A tench haven set below Walcot Hall, filled with mystery and character. That was allowed to weed up, be ravaged by predators then become completely impossible to fish. BAA let it go. I believe a syndicate took it over, sorted it out and now charge hundreds per year to fish it.

Reading the above sounds ever so familiar.
