Re: Shrewsbury BAA waters Underdale

Thanks mate, may be worth giving this post a bump when the coarse season starts too smiling

Re: Platforms set too high off water!

I think most of us recognise the good work you guys do Stew, any criticism which comes your way on the forum is quite rare and should be seen as such when you think how many members we got. Hopefully it's constructive in the majority of cases

On the subject of constructive criticism the issue I would have with high platforms is that they can be very dangerous as I had a mate who fell off one once years ago on the Ouse, at the time we thought it hilarious but could we get him out? No chance it was only the help of another member who had a rope in his car, lucky it was summer as we were able to see the funny side of him clambering around in rushes trying to get out

I think it's worth pointing out that it's not just heavy keepnets that are hard to lift out from such a height.

Re: Platforms set too high off water!

To be fair to Tracker his original post was fairly constructive, wouldn't it been better if someone from the club had said Ok we'll take your input on board. Before explaining why they are at the height stated. Too often clubs see a members gripe as just that without actually stepping back and saying I know we done a load of work on this but perhaps the issues raised are ones we didn't foresee and could address next time

It may also be worth mentioning that platforms usually sink a little with usage and gravity

Re: Illegal fishing costs 3 men more than £1,800

A bailiff may not have the rights to enforce the law regarding a lack of an EA fishing licence but they certainly can ask a member to show their EA fishing licence, this is commonplace in many clubs.

In most cases the angler will be happy to show both his membership and EA licence, every now and then though you'll get a narky member who won't want to show the EA licence and they don't do anyone any favours long term, or they have something to hide. That's when the bailiff can contact the EA. I'm assuming something similar happened in this case as the odds of the EA rocking up at Mythe for a random licence check are pretty slim.

Sometimes you get member moaning that they've had to produce whilst wading mid river etc etc. Bottom line is the bailiffs do a good job with little resources at times so if you get checked be helpful and if you get checked twice or three times in a day by different bailiffs see it as a good thing

Re: holding barbel in a keepnet

"The real issue is having a keepnet that is large enough and pegged out correctly" This is true and river conditions also would apply but the other issue is those who actually advocate the use of keepnets for safer release of Barbel. We've all seen some deathtrap keepnets in our time and they are still out there believe me and we don't really need inexperienced anglers digging them out in the name of fishcare.

Are keepnets users are just being naturally defensive, therefore going on the offence? Perhaps if they were left them alone to peg out correctly none of this would happen, although photos of the fish up the top of the bank flapping about will certainly warrant an opinion of quite a few anglers. Match anglers are used to this and know the fish are strong but to a catch and release angler it doesn't look pretty and they see scale and fin damage and blame keepnets, keepnets users blame gravel, offence, defence etc etc from both parties.

Pretty sure groups like the Barbel society have advice in fish care at the end of the day it's just advice, there's plenty out there who'd whack them on the head and BBQ them, meanwhile the fish soldier on through all that plastic and chemical filth in our rivers, which are being drained dry, keepnets are quite low down on their problems right now
