Re: Roach fishing - Staffs-Worcs Canal

Regarding the presence of otters on the Staffs / Worcs canal. There have been otters present for a while now at various points along its length, these along with a marked increase in the pike population seems to coincide with the disappearance of the roach from 2 to 3 ounces upwards which we used to catch plenty of these on caster or white maggot. I have recently been in touch with the fisheries officer at CRT asking for a possible solution or explanation on the situation, but the reply I got was negative to say the least. Perhaps the otters will start taking the pike when every other species has gone.

Halesowen RBL club match fished on the Staffs / Worcs canal at Hinksford 19/11/23

Not ideal conditions with the canal being extremely clear, no boats and the bottom carpeted in leaves along with a blustery wind we probably didn't expect too much and adding to the fact CRT had been there in the week tree cutting some areas of the far bank. Anyway, everyone caught something.

1st Malcolm Merrick 13 - 7 - 8 ( Skimmers and perch to pole fished worm )

2nd Sean Waite 8 - 9 - 8

3rd Paul Skidmore 5 - 9 - 0

4 Steve Horton 5 - 5 - 0

5th Kevin Clark 5 - 3 - 0

6th Garry Mason 4 - 12 - 0

Halesowen RBL match on the Avon at Bidford LB 12/11/23

I think I probably made the right choice by taking my grandson to play football as I missed this one and by looking at the state of my son's gear and clothing plastered in mud on his return I was correct. Anyway, with the river still carrying some extra water and only dropping slowly, here's the result from the lads that turned up.

1st Geoff Garrish 3 - 12 - 0 ( one good chub and a few bits to maggot feeder )

2nd Stewart Mulheron 2 - 13 - 0 ( Roach to bread feeder )

3rd Garry Mason 2 - 9 - 0

4th Andy Sloan 1 - 6 - 0

Cradley Heath Labour AC fished on the Staffs /Worcs canal at Hinksford 5/11/23

With the previous days heavy rain and the canal being like tap water is was expected to fish a little harder than usual and it did on some areas. With it being so clear, perch were expected to be the main species to target, but the winner had skimmers.

1st Sean Waite 11 - 13 - 0 ( skimmers to 2lb on pole fished worm and pinkie )

2nd Stewart Mulheron 6 - 2 - 0 ( Perch to pole fished worm )

3rd Simon West 5 - 6 - 0

4th Jon Baker 3 - 3 - 0

5th Kevin Clark 2 - 9 - 0
