Re: Paddle boarders

The CART webpage reference to licencing probably only refers to the rivers and canals that they control. For other waters not under their jurisdiction, different arrangements probably apply.

Re: Newhalls / Stourport - missing roach

I have never had any problem parking there although the car park does get quite full nowadays even when neither the rowers nor the footballers are there. I think it's overflow from the new medical centre.

Re: Newhalls / Stourport - missing roach

Similar experiences. The roach are still there but lately seem to be packed tightly near the main road bridge in Stourport. Usually as the light fades they start to disperse and you can sometimes winkle a few out, but they are not really feeding. They will not move onto the usual stick-float line and you have to trot down perhaps 30 m to get bites, well beyond where your loose feed settles.

When they are really "having it" the roach will come up right under where your loose feed goes in.

Hopefully as the days lengthen and it gets a bit warmer they will have a final feed before the end of the season.

Re: Salmon Spey Casting -Where

Yes, there are a few spots on the Middle Severn where you can try, especially when the river is low and you can get out onto gravel or wade safely.

Northwood below the rapids below the old railway stanchions.

Trimpley - several areas here.

Kinlet (Stanley) towards the top end of the length.

Arley - a couple of areas on the Harbour Inn water and also upstream of the bridge, both banks, around the rapids half a mile upstream of the bridge.

Your chances of catching a salmon here are minuscule but I have seen them from time to time, so you never know...

Retreat Farm Ponds revisited...

Fish do live there...

Had a short session yesterday evening under perfect conditions, warm, still, overcast. A quick look at Pond 2 (the one on the left as you drive in) revealed zero surface activity other than from geese and moorhens. Pond 1 looked more promising with some colour and the very occasional small fish on the surface.

I started with two lines, meat in the margins and corn and pellet half way across to the island. Not even a sign of a bite. I noticed what were clearly fish bubbles to my right towards the far end of the pond and had an exploratory cast with corn over the bubbles, and was rewarded with two small carp (8-10 oz) that took the bait on the drop - not on the bottom amongst the bubbles.

Fished on until dusk, not another flicker either over either the baited areas or over where I had seen the bubbles.

There are definitely fish in here but not in any quantity. A shame as this water does have potential - the first stocking of carp back in 2016 did really well for a couple of years but I don't think the fishery has settled down since the drain-down in 2018, floods in 2020 and 2021 and raids on the larger fish from otters.
