Knowle Sands turns up trumps again.

What a great session at Knowle again 5 Barbel and 1 chub.

I wasnt planning on going today but a friend cancelled a planned meet so I ventured down river again instead. Despite forecast it turned into a lovely morning (if you could get out of the wind) with air temperature at 14C. I drove to Eardington to try at Knowle Sands again but went to a peg that I hadnt been able to fish for about two months as the river had been to high.

I must have been the only nutter down there so the long walk to the peg hoping it was going to be free was worth it. I duly cast out one rod with lob worms and set-up my other rod on bread flake for chub. First cast out the bread rod hooped over but I missed the bite - next five casts proved fruitless so went back onto lobs on this rod too.

After a bit of casting around I eventually found some fish and finished this peg with five barbel in the net. Swim then went dead so I moved upstream but nowt on this one either.- packed it in and decided to try another couple of pegs on the way back to the car. To cut a long story short didnt get any more barbel but caught a nice chub then lost another at the net. Went home wet but happy as the drizzle had now well and truly set in.

That's twenty six barbel in the last five sessions at Knowle - not bad at all for winter fishing!

Re: Red Letter Day at Knowle Sands

Hi Dave,

There are two options on parking - first car park is opposite Swan Inn but it is quite small and its a bit of a hill down to the first two meadows. For Sections 3 and 4 park near the sewage works - plenty of parking on the grass. This is flat walking all the way to the pegs but about three quarters of a mile back to the top end of section 3.

As far as the pegs go, they are all reasonably well maintained but can get slippy after rain. The first meadow is very steep banks and shallow once you are down at river level - advise take a tripod if you are going to fish these pegs. Section 2 is in narrow wooded gorge and the river is a little deeper in places. Section 3 opens out again and the pegs are easier but they get less frequent further downstream you go - until you get to the big red cliff and then there are quite a few through here but the water is generally shallow. Section 4 you will find very few pegs opposite the caravan park.

As to peg choice its seems its down to preference, some people like the first section others like the second. I personally like the third section as this is the furtherst from the car park and usually quiet.

Cheers,

Chris

Red Letter Day at Knowle Sands

I had a few days off work this month and managed a few terrific sessions, particularly at Knowle Sands. Caught 15 barbel and two chub last week and one of my best days ever Tuesday 20th Oct when I managed eighteen barbel to nine pounds.

All were caught on either 12mm crab pellets or two glued 6mm elips pellets.

Totalling up this last week I have managed to catch over sixty barbel. Not bad going for a low clear river. Mind you I had to work for them, I kept on the move and tried several pegs beofre locating the fish so dont think its easy by any means!

My advice is to keep mobile and if you havent had a bite within half an hour or so then move, yes you may catch one or two with persistence but to get any number then you have to find the shoals.
