1980 BAA Guide to Waters

Found my old 1980 BAA Waters guide over the weekend - quite a lot has changed! All that water on the Great Ouse, all those pits, the Thames, dozens of stretches on the Severn and Avon all gone, plus all the Stratford Canal. I'd ticked all the venues I'd fished (was only a teenager then) and match weights. Fascinating to see all the BAA Welfare results, Big Un's both Canal and River. And nobody had thought of digging holes in the ground and filling them with ten a penny carp hybrids back in those days.

Re: Barton

The Avon is capable of throwing up some seriously fat barbel in many stretches, only last season a Hampton Ferry open was won with one fish for 14-14 from an unfancied peg (30 I think down behind the cricket pitch), and Harvington/Offenham throws up fish to 15. From BAA waters though, Marlcliff used to have some lumps below the weir but not heard of much coming off there. No reason why Lower Moor and Wick shouldn't produce seriously big fish, they're not targeted as often though I guess.

Re: Severn Zander

Had a tiny one on the stick at Ladyham last season, no more than two ounces.

Re: New Retreat Pools - The good and the bad!

Fished Pool 1 today, nothing but carp, and all on red maggot. Spoke to a local who told me the pools hadn't been fished for 15 years and there was nothing in there but small carp. It was so clear I could see the lack of interest in my bait at 5m fishing 6 foot deep down the first ledge. Opposite the point of the island, furthest from the car park area. All the mirrors I caught were little fat barrels as wide and deep as long, all around 3lb, but the commons were lovely fish, scale perfect and an ideal shape, deep gold and looking like classic commons. Total absence of silvers worries me though, nothing in the margins, and no carp cruising or topping. The local told me the place will be impossible to fish by July as the weed just takes over. Don't think I'll be back, but looking forward to the adjacent river stretch.

Re: New water - Retreat Farm Fishery

Defnitely don't want barbel putting in there, as has been rightly pointed out elsewhere on this thread by several people, it ain't the optimum environment for them to thrive and breed, and there's plenty just behind the pools in the Severn anyway.

Pity they're carp ponds in the main, I'd echo the call for more tench and a bit more of a balance with different species for whom stillwater is a better fit.

That said, delighted to have some new pools to try out not far away from home and that aren't commercial madness.
