The Severn is still a great river. My view is that if you set your stall out with a feeder and pellet rig to fish for barbel exclusively, you might be disappointed. It seems you have to put the hours in for the odd fish. However, if you fish more traditionally with the float or roving ledger, for anything with fins, you can catch well and a good variety of species. Perhaps the Severn is reverting to more of a mixed fishery as it was before the barbel boom of the 1970s. I have no scientific knowledge to support this, just a view, but the days of lots of anglers catching big bags of barbel seem to have gone.
