Avon Navigation Scheme

We have been made aware of a proposal by the Avon Navigation Trust to open the Avon between Stratford and Warwick to allows boats to be able to access Warwick from Stratford via the Avon.

Appendix 1 - Avon Navigation Scheme Socioeconomic Report January 2019 V2.pdf

The proposal details two options;

  1. To make the river navigable by the building of locks and dredging.
  2. In addition to the use of locks and dredging, also construct a canal to bypass a stretch of the river in the Barford area.

Either of these options will have a major impact on our Wasperton fishery due to dredging, lock construction and the resulting boat traffic.

  • Environmental damage.
  • bank erosion due to boat wakes.
  • Disturbance of bankside bird life.
  • Barriers to fish and eel migration due to lock and canal construction.
  • Destruction of fish spawning grounds as a result of dredging.
  • Degredation of water quality during construction.
  • Change in river level potentially requiring reconstruction of exising fishing platforms.
  • Reduction in quality of angling environment as a result of passing boats.

This document was discussed by Stratford cabinet on the 11th Feb 2019, we are not aware of the outcomes which are potentially;

A. To note the study and take no further action, or

B. To commission further work to progress the project in full, or

C. To agree the following recommendations:-

  1. That the study setting out a high-level assessment of environmental and the socio-economic impacts of the proposal to extend the Avon Navigation Scheme from Stratford (Alveston) to Warwick is noted; and
  2. That at this stage no further work is undertaken to progress the scheme other than to work with Warwick District Council on a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to promote improved footpath/cycleway access along the Avon corridor between Warwick and Stratford.

We will keep you updated.

We have only just been been made indirectly aware of this proposal and as a result had no opportunity for input.

Please email any comments, input etc to us at baarod1@btinternet.com which we can then include within our input to the proposal.
