Took a walk down the deerhurst/apperley strech this evening with a plan to fish it when season opens
Really disappointed its all completly over grown could only walk down to 1 swim this has been really negleted stinging nettles way above my waist

Also walked up to apperley pools same thing completly overgrown and neglected

Have baa thought about selling this strech so it can put back to how it was and looked after

Probably some of their most southerly waters so more than likely doesn't figure very highly in their interests, but on the upside you can always find a vacant swim, if you take a machete with you..

If i lived close by Id never be off Danjohn.....like Ricasso said, a shovel and a machete, make your own swims and you're pretty almost certain to have the place to yourself.....bliss!

True the fish don't care too much if the banks are over grown, but this stretch is local to me and in all the years I have never seen any pegs cut or anyone fish the Apperley stretch. But it is tidal, and the banks are steep and can be lethal...and if you survive all that what can you expect to catch Eels?

Re: Deerhurst and apperley

A few years ago I thought I'd have a go on the river just by Deerhurst, almost opposite the boathouse to be exact, I managed to find a way down to the water in what maybe years ago previously was probably a peg, I was travelling light as I prefer to do on the pools and the river down here, using a barbel rod and ledgered a couple of sweetcorn on a long hooklink under some overhanging branches, whatever it was that took it shot straight off upstream and there was no way I could stop it, it finally broke off and to this day I've no idea what it was, a big carp washed in? Barbel? who knows...It wasnt the chub I was expecting!

A few cats in the system, could have be one of those, also some very big carp, but that sort of experience happens quite a bit on the Lower, that's why I keep going back I guess.

Onelastcast, I hadnt thought of that, it's possible I suppose, I've generally found that the shady slack water margins are far more productive than just whacking it out into open water, there is a lot of interesting stuff in the lower river, most of it big, also the predators...if anyone fancied a go I would suggest putting the time in, travel light because on a lot of the 'pegs' you wont have the space for box's etc, and be ready to move quickly, on a big flood tide the river will rise quite a few feet in minutes and you will be left scrambling up the bank with all your kit, as soon as you see the flow stop get out! the Severn below Tewkesbury can really produce but it's not for the fainthearted.

Re: Deerhurst and apperley

thanks for the reply's think i will have do do a bit of gardening work to be able to fish it!

there are some very large elusive fish down there have seen them myself some monsters in the margins walked the dog further down this morning and heard a massive crash in the water turned round though a sheep fell in but nothing there just a massive ripple good signs!

ive now joined another club further down on the tidal part where the pegs are in much better condition and looked after but this will be my first season on the tidal part so will take your advise about the rising water etc

Re: Deerhurst and apperley

Hi Dan,
I live next to the Lower Severn, and the times I have walked the banks never seen much indication above the surface of any big fish, so good on you in hearing that fish, and seeing some in the margins, I take it what you saw were carp in the margins?

Fished just below the Boathouse in Tewkesbury a few years back, like you said in the margins, just with some light float gear, something picked up the corn and sped off, didn't even see it, Birds Meadow similar, except I did see it, surfaced mid river, big carp and one roll and it was gone.

Remember once fishing at Severn Stoke with some other anglers, summer evening, all quiet, and then a mighty crash, like someone dropped a bus in the river from a great height...all the nearby anglers came rushing thinking I fell in!!!

Of course we all know about that 95lb 'Cat' caught from Ripple a couple of years back, so they are in there, did see a 'cat' surface at Birds Meadow last summer, right in my peg.mischievous

Good luck with the new club water I think I know where that is, I need to do some pioneering myself on the Lower Lower.

Re: Deerhurst and apperley

yes i have seen carp in the margins a few times i have also seen a small cat fish down by haw bridge in the sluice but sadly it was dead that was only 2 weeks ago so they are definitely around the area there are a few match anglers who ive spoke to and regularly accidentally hook carp so there must be a good number along that stretch i live in tirley myself so it is ideal for me being next to the river
will be giving it a good go not only for the carp for anything that swims my way as it is a mystery of what is in those parts as nobody talks about their catches so its been hard trying to get info around there.
i walk my dog down there every day hoping to see some signs and this morning was the first proper indication they are around just a shame have to wait another 4 weeks until i can get my rods out!
