Went to Stubbs lake for quite days fishing and was confronted by travellers racing round in cars and running down the fences, also on the other side of the lake was a group of foreigners cutting up the trees around the lake to have a fire while they fished! I had to pack up and leave the lake in hurry as was quite worried about my safety and vehicle, not to mention the track to the lake is awful! I think I will try my luck at coppice in the future...

Re: Stubbs lake chaos

Sounds about right from other posts I've read in the past. A shame, it used to be a favourite venue of mine a few years ago, often had the place to myself. Needless to say I don't go any more. Nice stretch of river adjacent but don't feel safe on my own with those yobs about, it's quite isolated.

There's a pikey camp not far away I believe. I hear they cause problems at Marlcliff and other stretches in the area. I fish alone, so I wouldn't go anywhere near them. A shame really.

There has been rumours that the council are closing the gypsy camp down....let's hope it's true.

Re: Stubbs lake chaos

I remember a year or two back someone else saying they'd had this kind of trouble when fishing at Stubbs Pool.

It's a real shame, I fished the river section a few times about 5 years ago and had some decent barbel - up to 11lb. Though I only managed to catch when the river was up and coloured.

I was thinking about giving it another try when the river season opens, but will definitely give it a swerve now. So I'm grateful for this information as I also fish alone.

Re: Stubbs lake chaos

Terrible shame that mate, I've had similar experiences recently. It seems to be a meeting place for Eastern Europeans four cars pulled up last time I was there and like you say they had a fire going, rods out all over the place, drinking alcohol, they weren't fishing. Also the pikeys were using the bank near the wood as a race track and like you say the condition of the track leading to the lake is not the best.. I'll also be giving it a wide berth in the future, fishing for me is about relaxing winding down...
