So there I was enjoying a great day on my favourite stretch of the Middle Severn when voices called down from the bank: "Caught anything?" - I think I mumbled some inaudible reply along the lines of "Please leave me in peace as I'm trying to catch a barbel or two" , The enquiring angler then appeared in the swim above me and proceeded to launch what appeared to be beach-caster tackle into mid-stream. Amazingly after some time he appeared to be into a barbel and proceeded to winch it in and drag it across the pebbles onto the beach - at this point I think I suggested that using a landing net might be a good idea. After judicious weighing and photo-taking by his bikini-clad wife the poor, the unfortunate fish was launched into the flow with out a second thought. Luckily, I think it survived despite this ill treatment. Said bikini clad wife then decided that a bit of paddling into her partner's swim might be fun and she continued to take photographs. I considered approaching this fellow angler and asking for confirmation of his membership but I wisely decided that as I was alone and his wife looked quite intimidating it would be better to retreat gracefully.
I may have tried to put an amusing slant on this post but in all honesty I was disgusted by this so-called angler's watercraft - have any fellow anglers experienced similar behaviour and if so, how did you deal with it?

Re: Trimpley Turmoil

Sadly it is the way during the summertime on BAA middle Severn waters. I heard Jeremy Kyle considered recording a show down at the Unicorn Inn, probably the worst of all the behaviour already described.

However, even Jezza has his standards, and decided against it in the end.

Re: Trimpley Turmoil

I was down there last week. I always walk down from Arley as I enjoy the wander and figured it would be quieter down Trimpley way, however it wasn't the case as the beachy sections were abound with kids throwing stones and families having bbqs plus some iffy looking fishing going on.

Didn't know you could park in the waterworks itself right by the river? As this was where they were parking

Re: Trimpley Turmoil

It's like that every weekend.
Fires, unlicensed fishing and screaming kids.
There are no pike left because they've all been poached and eaten.

Should you have confronted the idiot?
Not likely, if the BAA can't be bothered to protect it's waters with proper bailifing, why should you?

Re: Trimpley Turmoil

Had a match one sunny Saturday at Trimpley some years ago!
I drew a peg on the middle of the shingle beach.
Lots of kids and families paddling, swimming and throwing stones.
Several drunks making a nuisance of themslves.
One even tried to help me land a barbel until I told him to ''push off''.
Also there were a couple of dogs running in and out of the water.
However, even with all this shenanigans going on, I still managed to win the match with nearly 40lbs of barbel.
After many years of fishing for barbel on Bewdley open matches, I have come to the conclusion that if they are feeding they ignore everything else that is going on around them.
Boats, swimmers, stone throwers people wading, dogs, whatever, make absolutely no difference whatsoever.
On the other hand, no matter how quiet it is, if they are not in the mood to feed, you won't get a bite!
The noise made by people shouting etc cannot be heard more than an inch or two below the surface because sound does not readily transfer from air to water.
If you don't belive me, just go to your local swimming baths when there are lots of screaming kids there.
Go under water more than a foot and you will not hear a thing.

Re: Trimpley Turmoil

Completely agree Tracker- I actually have no issue with the public enjoying the river for paddling, stone throwing, canoeing etc - I myself have caught many barbel a "stone's throw" from what would be perceived as excessive noise levels. If the the barbel are up for it they'll feed no matter the supposed interference. What really irritates me is poor watercraft by so called anglers. Trimpley is a beautiful section of the middle Severn and will always attract day-trippers who have every right to be there.
