Hi all, does the wasperton stretch still hold barbel? Also does anyone know where i can get results of all matches that have been held on the BAA stretches of rivers so far this season? I personally think that all club matches should report there catches to the BAA.

Re: wasperton

It doesn't quite answer your question but I fish it from time to time and always assume that's what I might catch, I have had them in the past so I don't doubt they are still there. Haven't been there for about 9 months. It does look prime barbel water. I nice stretch of water and park by your peg is a bonus.

Re: wasperton

well, i fished wasperton on saturday, right up until dark. no barbel, no chub, plenty of eels though. looked really good. the leamington stretch up from section one looked better with more flow. giving it another go today. might try the roving approach.

Re: wasperton

This is my nearest BAA water so I'm there occasionally and the Barbel have been few and far between over the last 5 years. It tends to be the odd, big, old fish is caught when any are caught. It's a beautiful stretch of water but it has never been prolific in the times I've fished it.

A barbel of 11.5lbs was caught at wasperton last week of June as well - by me! It can be tough there but put the hours in and there is the odd nice fish.

Re: wasperton

Hi, what section did you catch. first few pegs in section one look really good but then goes a bit mill pondy. I guessing because the river is on the low side and not much water pushing through. I will persevere as i tend to not give up when i have the bit between my teeth. Guidance is always a bonus.

Re: wasperton

You would be surprised where they show up - there was a match on when I went and I had to just fit in on a less than ideal peg full of cabbages and had little confidence in catching (I would have won the match with that single fish as well I think (although I don't own one and would never put a barbel in a keepnet)).

PS. i am posting on a PC and the double post issue is still showing by the looks of it

Re: wasperton

Barbel like cabbages, dont believe the "star" anglers that tell you to fish fast running water over gravel for Barbel.

Re: wasperton

I fished the barford club section the last 4 seasons and you are right, barbel love cabbages. I caught loads from the cabbage pegs. I haven't as yet tried the cabbage pegs on the wasperton stretch but i will. I guess i will have to get my beefier tackle out.

Re: wasperton

ha ha I tend to use the same setup for everywhere when i am after Barbel, 1.75 peregrine rod, kingpin centrepin with 60-70yds of 12lb line 2-3 oz lead running rig. Not let me down yet although some of these WA fish are very powerful.

Re: wasperton

yeah, i'm using greys barbel rod, 1.75 tc but lower bs line. gonna beef up to 12lb i guess. do you use a soft braid hook link? or 12lb straight through?

Re: wasperton

Wouldn't advocate straight through rigs in any situation for barbel, but do believe in simpler the better. Perhaps the best advice for the WA in the summer is keep the hemp going in, fish late and keep casting down to a minimum, if bream are are a problem, go big pellet or boilie on the hook, 20mm not too big. I found if the Bream come, the Barbel will follow.

Re: wasperton

I agree, straight through is a bad idea, always use stonger mainline than your hooklength.

I fished wasperton last night but didn't have a touch.

I fish 12lb mainline with 8-10lb FC hooklink depending on situation and keep rigs very simple - running inline ledger, rubber bead to cushion knot then a swivel on the end of the mainline. 2-6ft of FC hooklink and then a 6-14 hook depending on bait with a knotless hair rig knot.

I used a pair of Shimano Purist barbel rods with the 1.75lb quiver tops on them and a pair of small baitrunners.

I've only been snapped once and that was last year on the Severn and I lost a fish at the hook as I think I had damaged the knot unhooking the previous barbel so always check your knots after a fish.

Re: wasperton

likewise i always use hooklinks, normally 18 inch but can go from pretty short, 6 inch to very long 3-4 feet depending on where i am fishing and what i am trying to achieve.

Re: wasperton

I havent fished it yet, will be but usual tactics, slacks, holes in the riverbed, 10yds or so above snags. Possibly bait n wait with hemp and a handful of scattered mixed size size pellets. I have also had a fair success on the WA with boillies, no hemp and scattered mixed size pellets. Probably nothing you havent tried yet. At the moment i would probably fish the slightly shallower water at the top of the stretch, possibly a bit of spotting, few bits of bait on runs near weed etc.

Re: wasperton

At last, barbel landed from this very hard stretch of the WA. JUST UNDER 14LB. It's a pb for me. I will try and load pics later. Having a few beers now.
