As a newcomer to BAA waters I have gone in search of late season barbel. I would welcome help on both the best venues and the best techniques. For example, ledger or float? how far across to cast? What breaking strain line? What bait to use and how to present it (hair rig vs bait to hook)? What size hook? What ground bait (is hemp good all year round)? What weight of feeder do I need to hold the bottom. Basically all the help I can get as I am a novice when it comes to BAA waters. I did all my fishing around Oxford - The Thames, Thame, Cherwell etc. but that isn't much use when it comes to the mighty waters of this area.

hi mate there are no real differences, use a lead to find depths holes, gravel silt etc personally . i normally use the lead fishing fot barbel. whatever worked before on the rivers will largely work on BAA waters

I don't really see what the problem is Steve, if you have done Barbel fishing on the Thames and Cherwell to go with what you know on the Severn, The same rules apply, but at times you need to fish heavier, that's all.
There is no short answer really to reply to where are all the Barbel and I how do I catch them, but that's the beauty of fishing, not catching, and that's why I personally do it.
The Severn varies greatly, the Lower is deep and and wide, and presents a real challenge, when blanking is the norm however the middle Severn is easier, and BAA offers the best fishing for the Angler.
Take your pick, lots to go at.
In the summer I would use a 1.75 Barbel rod 10/12 mainline, 8/10 lb hook lengths, various feeders and leads, Pellets softened for the feeders, and pellet for the hooks, keep feeding a line, regulary and keep it going in..couldn't be easier, look for the well used peg.

Thanks Bob and onelastcast! The Thames at Oxford doesn't have much in the way of barbel - mainly chub. Anyhow it is really helpful advice about beefing up the tackle to fish the Severn. I have had 4 outings so far - 2 on the Teme and 2 on the Severn. 3 of my 4 outings have been blank. I did get a chub on the Teme - it looked as surprised as I was. I don't mind drawing a blank. The most enjoyable session was on the Severn last week when I got snowed on, rained on, hailed on and then dried by the winter sun - being out in the elements is part of the fun. Anyhow I am sure I will get the hang of it eventually. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply and I will let you know how I get on if I manage to get one in the next week and a bit!

not the greatest of times to fish right now anyway Steve, everyone is blanking, so you're not alone. It supposed to be warming up, so the last three or four days of the season may offer some hope of a fish or two.

Hi Johnny sorry to be a bit slow. I was planning to go to Fladbury on the Avon. I really am a novice to this area as I hadn't appreciated the impact of last Wednesday's rain. It was impossible to get to Fladbury, to fish anyway, as the road by the weir was flooded and closed. I did stop to look at the river and the flood water. It was racing down and great lumps of tree were flying down the river. I have now added the Environment Agency midlands twitter account to my list of essential checks. Have abandoned the idea of end of season barbell in favour of the canals - at least to start with although I will also try the carp pools. Barbel will have to wait until the glorious 16th and beyond. I am learning fast!
