Hi all, gave Severn Stoke a go Saturday and being relatively new to fishing with two rods ive bought two bait runners and for the first time I had the 2nd rod go while I was playing a barbel.Unfortunately it dropped the hook after just a few seconds what I want to know is do you set them really loose or tightened up so they just about pull the line off ?thanks

Re: Baiitrunners

I'll be in the minority here i'm sure, but I only fish with one rod as I can't see how I could cope with two fish on at once on my own.

It's bound to happen sometime.

If you're using a baitrunner, I didn't think there was that much control over the tension when it's in freespool mode, unlike with a normal clutch? Could be wrong.

If i'm in barbel territory, even with one rod and a non baitrunner, I set the clutch loose enough so it'll give line ...without the rod going over and in. Just in case i'm momentarily distracted.

I've had it happen a few times, it's not the greatest of situations, and you end up in a right mess. What i do is just leave the second fish to run on the baitrunner while i concentrate on landing the first fish. Usually, the second fish will slow or even stop. Once the first fish is in the landing net, i leave it there, still hooked, and then go about playing and landing the second one. All being well, you end up with two fish in the net, and probably some kind of tangle, which you can sort out whilst unhooking the fish.

Having a double hookup on the Lower Severn is a rare thing indeed, in fact, having a single one is difficult most of the time!

Re: Baiitrunners

Not sure about other brands, but my Shimano baitrunners are adjustable. They have two rings, one for adjusting the drag, the other for adjusting the baitrunner. Very much needed in even moderate faster flow.

As to setting then up, just enough to counter the current

11lb 1 oz isn't too shabby at all. Congratulations that's a cracking fish.
