Any chance of a bailiff patrolling Wasperton occasionally in the evening? None English fish thieves are targeting the Pike and Perch. One I have seen a few times including yesterday evening,no landing net or unhooking mat, doesn't stop to fish if there are other anglers there to see what he's up to.

Re: Bailiffs?

Wel,the fish theives are still turning up,the bailiffs aren't. One particular offender(usually has a mate with him,was solo last night)who hammered a neighbouring club water last season, breaking many a club rule, six rods out, deadbaiting before October 1st,taking fish away, night fishing, before moving on to pillage said club's pool in the close season is now targetting the BAA water at Wasperton. He turned up at gone 8pm and was still setting up at 8.40pm when I left. He wasn't there for the last 90 minutes fishing. The aformentioned clubs bailiff made visits at the same time every day,so,after a certain time you were "safe" in the knowledge you won't get caught(if you are inclined to dodgey activity). Random visits by bailiffs soon put a stop to wrong doing, word soon gets around.
How about it BAA?

The volunteers that do this in their own time are always on the look out for new people to help out. No qualifications are necessary and it's easy to volunteer. Did the EA or police get back to you after reporting all the incidents? They tend to show up to a crime in progress, especially given the detail of the account you're able to provide to them.

Re: Bailiffs?

You could of challenged him as member . You have your card. I’m a leamington member and not heard of this guy doing as you say on the club waters . And the leamington stretch and college pool is very well bailiffed .

Instead of moaning in here why don’t you challenge him next time ?? Or take a photo etc ??

Re: Bailiffs?

Three things:- First. I fish evenings and the last time I saw the bailiff on the Leamington water was July 2021. Keeping quiet and out of sight I have witnessed all manner of wrong doing by "anglers" on both Leamington and BAA water at Wasperton. Just because Bazeck hasn't heard of these people it doesn't mean they weren't there.
Secondly. I am almost 67 years old with severe spinal stenosis and in no condition to be confronting anyone. As someone with 12 years bailiffing experience,in my younger days,I know that constant, random visits to a water soon discourages wrong doers and fish thieves.
I am not whinging and moaning for the fun of it. It would be good if the remaining, depleated fish stocks in our waters were protected from those who would take them for profit or because it is acceptable in other countries.
And finally. Did I report these wrong 'uns to the Police and the EA? Why would I? Club rules are not law, that excludes the Police. Under EA regulations a person is allowed to take a certain number of fish a day. That rules them out.
It's a club matter.

Re: Bailiffs?

Theft of fishing rights is a crime. The EA would also be interested in excluded methods and rules such as number of rods used. Sounds like there were plenty of grounds to suspect these may have been happening. You don't need to know they're breaking these laws, a suspicion is good enough. The issue with the post I'd that you're suggesting random checks are not currently happening, and that the efforts of the volunteers are inadequate. There is only so much a small group of volunteers can do. Anyone who wishes to complain or suggest the efforts of the bailiffs is not sufficient must first question what they've done to assist. For example taking photos, reporting incidents themselves. The issue I personally have is that everyone wants the waters to be protected, but nobody wants to be the protector, and very few people are willing to pay more for subs to fund paid bailiffs or water improvements.

Re: Bailiffs?

Spot on again Chris. As you know there are plenty of checks going on,on a regular basis and at all hours of the day and night. What are bailiffs expected to do when things like this aren’t reported properly and instead are put forward on a forum in the form of another whinge, way after the incident has happened?Would you wait a week or so to ring the police or maybe email them if you witnessed a burglary or someone’s car getting broke into?

Re: Bailiffs?

The problem the BAA has got, With all the stretchs of water they have to patrol, Sorry to state the obivious, They don't have enough bailiffs to police every stretch of water they control and until that changes, Then we will continue to have these conversations.

Over the last twelve months or more I have fished the Lower Severn and the W/Avon and not once have I seen or been spoken to by a bailiff.

Its been suggested about volenteering to become a bailiff, So just out of interest what incentives are their to become a bailiff ? Depending on how close or how far you live from the river ? Unless you are fishing who is going to jump in there car and visit a stretch of river and check to see who are BAA members or not members ?

I would suggest that a large number of BAA members are only interested in going fishing and not interested in getting involved with the day to day running of the BAA.
Lets see how many members turn up at this years AGM and voice there concerns on how the BAA runs it self ?

Re: Bailiffs?

That's exactly the issue RN. It's on a voluntary basis, out of your own moral obligation, which not many seem to have. Unfortunately we now live in a society where you have a 'right' to everything, and there should always be someone held to account- but it should always be someone else and never one's self.

In terms of benefits, if you genuinely carry out the responsibilities (I.e. not just say you'll do checks but never bother) there are some very good benefits- you get to learn a LOT about our waters, how they're fishing etc. Its also a good little social group too. Then of course the benefits are that you are taking ownership and pride in the waters you fish, rather than just leaving the problems for someone else to fix. It is genuinely rewarding when you get thanks off members for doing the rounds, and when you remove poachers.

To be honest I don't think our bailiffing system is perfect, and I will be making some suggestions personally which may encourage more to volunteer, but those that do volunteer put in a lot of time and effort to keep the club waters as secure as we can.

Re: Bailiffs?

Rivernovice…the problem is everyone has these great ideas about how the club and bailiffs should do this and that on forums and social media but how many actually get off their arse from behind their keyboard and do something about it?The turn out for the AGM is pathetic every year considering how many members there are.If you want change then join the committee, join the bailiff teams, join the fisheries team. There are plenty of opportunities there to put your ideas across. The bailiffing figures have increased massively in the last few years but there’s always room for more improvements

Re: Bailiffs?

As you say Stew its easy to sit behind a keyboard and moan and complain.
Differnt people have different reasons for not getting involved, Spare time if they are working, Family commitments, Lack of finance etc, etc. and some people are just not interested in getting involved as long as they can just turn up and go fishing ? Also there is the issue personal saftety
if you are a bailiff ?

With the BAA being based in Birmingham ? How many members actualy live in or near to Birmingham ? I would assume and some one will correct me if I am wrong ? BAA bailiffs have a monthly meeting at the BAA office ? with reports of how many checks have been made over the previous month ? So depending on where you live with the cost of living set to go through the roof in the coming months travelling to BAA office could be a problem each month depending on where you live ? I would also assume to become a bailiff ,There would have to be a DBS check ?

Re: Bailiffs?

Personally I baillif our waters as does my son, he checked two poachers recently at Fladbury, and got them to leave.

If we all did our bit it would really help, also litter picking too, I know its a pain but leaving it is not an option. I think there was a rule about litter in the peg you are fishing, if it's not yours tough but you own it and have to remove or be banned.

Fladbury is very well bailiffed as is Nafford , not so much Pershore weir which does need looking at.

The AGM at Birmingham in November is a stretch for many, I have said previously perhaps it could be held in the summer months, perhaps near a BAA angling venue / pub as an incentive to attend?

Re: Bailiffs?

There are 2 meetings per year (or there were last year at least). You get petrol money and a sandwich. Which is all the incentive I need. grin they've been held at different locations around our waters to be fairer on people travelling. Safety is absolutely a concern and the number 1. For example lone checks at night are a no no, and there are other basic things you can do to be safer. DBS checks are not necessary.

For me the key is to get a lot of people to do a little bit, rather than a few to do a lot. But when you see some of the effort and selfless sacrifices of time the volunteers give and even more so maybe the working group I think we should shout about these people and what they do more so the membership knows goes in to maintaining a 40 quid ticket with hundreds of miles of river, canal and pool.

Re: Bailiffs?

The AGM is one night in a year which the majority get at least 12 months notice of.Is that not enough notice to attend something that will probably last a couple of hours tops?Potentially future AGM’s will be around different locations in the future so let’s see how many turn up to them!My guess is probably the same dismal turn out and the same moaning will carry on.I’m sorry but the club shouldn’t have to coax members to come to this with the promise of a buffet and a free pint.If you care enough to make a difference then people would be there. As some do,travelling from as far as North Wales and up from Tewkesbury.

Chris is right there are two bailiff meetings a year and they are held at different venues. Also why would having a DBS check be an issue if it was a requirement?Despite the rotation of venues I’d say about a quarter of the total number of bailiffs come to these for various reasons.Difference is they don’t start whingeing about how things should be done on the internet.

Re: Bailiffs?

The moaning and whinging adjectives is well used on here but not so much by root and branch members.
Don't think members are so wanting a free sandwitch etc as a incentive to attend, just that attending will make a difference, and perhaps a venue that will see a greater interest in coming. Glad to see there is some thoughts behind a different venue and perhaps a summer month?

Re: Bailiffs?

How can you go over the previous years figures, fisheries and other sub committee reports when you’re only half way through the year in the summer? As you know the membership runs from the end of December so how can you discuss any successes or failures from the last year if you’re only half way through it?I really don’t see the benefit of having it in the summer.

It does make laugh when they moan about the location though, the clue is in the name “Birmingham “ Anglers Association.Do Worcester AA have their meetings in Bridgnorth?Or Telford AA have a trip down to Tewkesbury?Do these clubs hold their AGM’s in the middle of the summer? Also people moan about a let’s say 40-50 mile round trip ONCE a year, yet they do double that a week to go fishing! It seems that a lot of the moans about the AGM come from people that have never bothered to attend one!

Re: Bailiffs?

When you consider the number of members that live in and around the Birmingham area and with the AGM with in easy driving distance. Why they dont make the effort to turn up one time of the year is surprising ? and yet they will drive to some where that is not local for a few hours fishing ?
