Couldn't believe how much this weed has taken hold on the Stacklands stretch of the Wye- fished another stretch near Hereford and it was almost completely impossible to access much of the bank. Not pretending there is an easy solution but I have seen stretches of the Teme almost impossible to fish because of this invasive foreigner. Do the BAA have any strategy for starting to deal with this potential threat to our fishing?

Re: Himalayan BalsamTo be honest, its here to stay and with seeds transported by water, any partial strategy is doomed to be an expensive failure.

Re: Himalayan BalsamYou're right. The old "Red Rattle" is now endemic in England and will be almost impossible to eradicate. Because the river Wye is a SSSI it is Natural Englands' job to come up with a strategy for removal or control of any non-native species and Himalayan Balsam is certainly that. As anglers, we can just do our bit and knock it down with a bank stick (easy enough), but at this time of year beware of being showered with seeds, otherwise you'll find that next year you will have plants growing in your own gardens.

Re: Himalayan BalsamAs has been said already on this conversation, balsam is endemic on the Severn, Teme and Wye and spreading along the Avon so it is beyond the capabilities of the BAA Fisheries to eradicate it. As part of our summer cut-back, balsam is strimmed along with other vegetation around our river pegs but not removed from the whole fishery. This would not be effective as has already been said balsam seeds are propagated explosively from the plants so the bank would be reseeded with seeds floating downstream.
