Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

Then why bother 'weighing' them and publishing the pictures with a ridiculous overstated weight? He could have just caught them and slipped 'em back.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

"minimum size landing net sizes should now be brought in as a rule".
How would you enforce that exactly?
How big is the minimum and if it's a minimum size for barbel, do you enforce it for everyone using a method that could possible result in the capture of a barbel?

"Unhooking mats should be compulsory for any fish that needs to be laid down - carp, barbel, pike, zander, bream, chub, tench, whatever".
So if you are standing in the middle of he river, trundling meat on a centerpin for barbel or casting lures for pike, where exactly do you think this compulsory unhooking mat should go?
Should it perhaps be juggled along with the pointless landing net that is already a compulsory requirement?

Beware rules that may appear to be common sense for one aspect of the sport but which will detract from another anglers fishing experience,

It won't need to be laid down if you are stood in the middle of the river, would it Ken? Some of the Nets you see are a joke, the people tell you they are fishing for barbel.

If you're standing in the middle of the river, you don't need a landing net either - but you are required to have one with you.
This is the problem with rules.

Having rules doesn't stop idiots from being idiots, they just restrict people who would ordinarily be sensible.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

I see that even now Autumn has arrived, and the Fladbury dreamers have packed up their gear for the winter, the romance continues with October's latest 'picture of the week' offering, a "15.2 from the middle Severn".

What a load of total tosh....it's 10lb at best. Please, please, please, can we have someone from the admin part of this forum to vet these pictures before they are posted on here.

I understand it's a business and all that, but you're not fooling any real barbel anglers about the weights of these fish.

Totally agree Jonny, First thing i did was laugh... If you compare it to your 10 pic you posted, it's a big 10 at a push.
I don't understand why people can't weigh fish and post realistic weights, it's not even a bad guess, because that would have been a round 15lb, not 15.2.
Experienced Barbel anglers can guess a Barbel's weight within 8oz, so why say it's something it's not, only to be ridiculed on the forum.

Never mind, all the fair weather anglers will soon be sitting in front of a warm fire, so the rivers will be a lot less busy for us,

Tight lines,
Dave

Not only that, these outrageous weights being posted for these fish are river/area record territory.

Great colours on that upper single/very low double though

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

Agree with the last few posts with Johny's original and subsequent comments. I am an experienced Barbel angler and my PB is 12lb, which, compared to these photos, looks much bigger than the quoted 15lb 2oz specimen. Estimating weights is fraught with misrepresentation and subject to errors. Unless a fish I have caught is ' worth' (IMO) weighing I tend to release without subjecting my precious captures to more stress and possible damage. John Care is an extremely experienced Barbel angler and takes care (sorry about the pun) to ensure his photographed fish are released without undue stress and time out of the water. You have to respect his opinion and judgement when it comes to estimating weights of Barbel he and others have caught, photographed and submitted for scrutiny.

Re: Nonsense weights of barbel on this forum

I think the gripe is with the fact that the association are publishing them on their home page, which makes them become that bit more official to other members, and non-members visiting.

People always have and always will either deliberately exaggerate, erroneously guess weights or type things wrong. However where it is clearly obvious that they are not anything like the weights they are the association should at least leave the weight off.

It’s not because it takes anything away from my own captures because it doesn’t, and I don’t publicise them – may be different for John and others. However it definitely loses a bit of credibility for the association and looks a bit amateurish!
