I just wondered if anyone still fishes the stick float on rivers anymore. I am never happier than standing in the water and trotting a stick but the only time I hear rivers mentioned these days is for barbel fishing. I have had 4 days off work so far this season and I have been to Manor Farm, Barton, Ladyham and Hansacre. All for stick float fishing and all great fun. After fishing for 15 years I have recently had to have 3 years off. These 4 trips have been wonderful and I couldn't be happier.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

So glad to hear this, I don't own a swim feeder! my wife and myself only float fish. Sometimes I use one of my centre pins, or my good old ABU 506s. Having fished the Severn for over 50 years I reckon nobody will know how to float fish eventually. This year the river has fished it head off, had great nets of silvers , with chub to 4lb + and the occasional barbel.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Hi - enjoyed reading your post. I've spent most of the last two seasons float fishing on the Severn and like you, I've had some great mixed bags. At this time of the year I tend to fish middle reaches between Bewdley and Bridgnorth, wading the shallow fast-flowing sections and fishing a "big stick" / avon type float and happy to catch anything that swims, including the occasional barbel. It's crazy that all the guys travel to the Severn from all over and then sit for hour after hour fishing the pellet feeder to catch the odd barbel (and often blank). Still - good news for us float guys as they don't know what they're missing. Tight lines

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Great to hear guys and I'm glad that I'm not the only one. That sounds like me Mick.....I have used a big avon stick every time that I've been out this season. I couldn't bear the thought of fishing a pellet feeder all day, and whilst I understand that everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, I just worry that so many are missing out on some great sport. I have been delighted with the amount of so-called 'bits' that have been about in the rivers so far this season. At Ladyham I caught dace all day long.......no more than a few ounces each but I was shattered at the end of the day. I guess if everyone else are just chasing the barbel then it leaves more for us to catch.
All the best Mick, and maybe see you on the bank some time.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

I agree with everything you both say, alas good trotting pegs are getting less & less. Due to being over grown , with willow , and brambles. nearly every peg on the severn is for legering. In some places the banks are so bad I have to take a rope to allow me access . I am getting less enthused about wading now as I get older, balance etc. However can any body recommend a good pair of waders? because the ones I use the grip on the bottom is next to useless, and the soles are so thin I can feel every stone on the bottom.
As for floats this year I bought some hand made Avons off ebay, and crystal drennan avons both brilliant.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Diawa have always done a good pair of waders for me, decent price and do the job.

Good to see a brotherhood of the stick thread, don't see many lol Only this week I had a day when I walked from Coombys farm to Arley trying different spots trotting pellet then back up all the way to the Ship. Bit of a walk which shows the fishing was hard work with it low and clear and bright sun overhead. Everyone was ledgering and most I talked to blanked, I managed a few nice chub which are always welcome.

Changed to maggot and had the usual problems with small dace riding the float up so will stick to pellet, hemp or meat when trotting. Do them dace ever switch off? maybe when it's colder would love to know.

P.s also saw a couple of Salmon Parr amongst the rocks whilst wading, had a pike have a go at a nice chub I was about to land and kingfishers buzz past me either side all of which made the legs feel less tired that night.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Hi Hornet
thanks for the Diawa waders info will check them out. Re : the dace I was still catching them on a size 10 hook and 6 maggots. I fish around Arley a lot. Dace never seem to switch off, over the lasts few winters they seem to shoal up around Arley village from the old ferry jetty up to Cromwells hole ( fishes good here using bolo method ) . Remember your pike tackle though. This season I have caught more brown trout up to around 1 1/2lb than ever before, lost count of salmon parr. This only shows how good the water is now.

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Hi Kites,

I've also tried to get through the dace the same way as you with the same problems although it shows the river is in good nick. If you can find the big perch the dace understandably don't show as I have had days around Arley/Bewdley which have been good for trotting maggots but the further upstream you go the more 'Dacey' it becomes.

Never heard many references to winter fishing above Bewdley so would be keen to try when the flow allows although it's a bit of a journey when the days are short for me.
