Where does the club and members stand on the etiquette of leaving gear in swims to keep them for later in the evening?

It's just that it's a tad annoying to do a three hour drive and then walk from Combys farm car park to the top of the section to find three good spots 'occupied' with limited bits of tackle, whilst the owners were in the cabins having a kip or whatever.

Re: Swim hogging

Strictly against the rules. And there are signs up on some trees at Stanley water saying just that. You would have every right to remove such items and to set up yourself in any peg which has been left unattended for an extended period of time. Just make sure that you do not damage any tackle or property which has been left in a peg. If you have a problem with any individual, then try to get their membership number and report it to the BAA office.

Re: Swim hogging

I've had the same problem on that stretch for years. Last time I went there were four swims left with tackle, its not a long walk but a bit annoying when nobody fishes those swims for most of the day.
I do remember that the accommodation used to be advertised with fishing but not so now.
Maybe a polite request to the owners at Coombys to inform their residents that its not cricket and some action from a bailiff may improve things.
I did mention this to a bailiff on another stretch last year wondering if BAA had some arrangement but apparently they have nothing.

Re: Swim hogging

Many, many, even many years ago, this used to be a problem at Walcot Lakes!
One day we got there at dawn and walked along the bank of the East Lake.
When we reached the pegs we fancied fishing, ''low-and-behold'' the pegs were taken by full sets of ''un-set-up-tackle'' ''saving-the-pegs''.
We removed it all to the back, out of our way.
Twenty minutes later the owners arrived and all hell broke loose.
We were shouting and dancing around each other with fists raised.
No actual blows were landed, but we would not move, so they had to fish other pegs.
The really stupid part of this is that we could have thrown their tackle into the undergrowth out of sight, or even worse, stolen it.
Lucky for them we were a bunch of honest dudes!
The fishing was crap!

Re: Swim hogging

question...do the people who rent these cottages have the right to fish the baa stretch if they have no membership as there are no day or week tickets anymore???
myself along with my son visited this stretch a couple of weeks ago quietly moving into swims only for three chaps to come from one of these cabins wade into the river with as much noise as they could then when asked by my son to try being quiet he was told whats the matter aint you catching.
we left by 10.30 am for a 30 mile trip home. if they were baa members then unfortunately they had every right to fish there but if not then they were poaching in my eyes.

Half the day trippers on the Severn I doubt have any form of license.

Thanks John for your swift and informative reply as ever, i'll probably err on the side of caution regarding any possible confrontation but it's good to know where we stand and that others have had this issue
