Went to Wick yesterday and discovered the monstrosity that is the Hydro power plant, which i am told only powers a leisure centre. So spoil some peoples leisure to give other peoples leisure cheap? power. Anyway whilst i was there a chap turned up to clear the screws, noisy bloody things, and it looked like there is no grill to stop fish going in there. If there isnt a grill/screen how many fish, eels etc will get mashed? I know there are fish passes but i doubt fish will know they are supposed to use them.
Shouldnt the EA change its name as it seems more interested in exploiting the rivers than protecting them and their inhabitants.

Re: WIck

Fished it a couple ot times this season, both times just eel, a few roach are showing, but I am afraid that monster has a lot to answer for. When you consider the old 'beach' area was a local spot where kids and older kids could have a paddle and we sometimes could fish...all gone, and for why to supply 'green' fuel to the Community centre, the irony!!! The flow has increased so much you need 2 ounces of lead to hold bottom, with removing the rushes and the gravel bar it has wrecked spawning redds too.

Well done to all concerned who allowed this vandalism, I hope those that got 'bribed' by the greedy company to have it installed can hand on heart say it was for the better good of the community, I for one think it is not.

All for green energy but not at the cost of natural habitat, I lobbied against it, even pointed out that I saw a Salmon pass the weir a few years back, fell on deaf ears, beware these Green meddling think they know whats good for us they don't.

Re: WIck

in most of northern Europe now they are removing these abortions as the benefit in creating this "grren energy" actually causes more harm than using fossil fuels would have. Sadly by the time the EA is finished they will be a common site on our rivers, as will chopped fish and eels.

Re: WIck

i know but they have to give permission i believe. Sure. there was an application on the Thames i think it was, where the plans called for grills to stop fish going in to the turbines, the company had proposed to put in a size to restrict fish, the EA said they could make the gaps bigger, cheaper for the company to install mo e fish kills though madness
