Im looking at having my first ever session on the Avon tomorrow. The nearest stretch to me is Mythe but happy to travel further. Having not fished it before which stretch is best for Chub with a chance of Barbel too - going with a relative who is new to rivers so want somewhere where he has a chance to catch something. Any suggestions/advice much appreciated.

Re: Avon

If its Barbel you are after ? You could try Nafford .A big fish weighing in at 15 lb was caught there last year . If the river is up and coloured . You wont go far wrong with meat . The best area to try is down the bottom end of the stretch . Good luck in your quest smiling

Re: Avon

Thanks RiverNovice

Ideally I'm after Chub with the off chance of a barbel. Nice to know some big ones in there but with the winter rains its probably washed down as far as the Bristol avon now lol

Re: Avon

Well after recovering from emergency surgery and not been fishing for over three months I see that River Novice is still trying to ruin Nafford as a big Barbel venue . He continues to highlight not only the stretch but is peg specefic. I have a 15, and a few other good fish, but I am told now by a friend that it is always now busy and of course the result will be pressured fish that will either die or just move.
It is a small stretch.
These big female Barbel are becoming rare, I see no need to name stretches, Barbel are to be found throughout the Avon, and we have enough to pioneer without killing it for many for whatever reason, but above all my concerns are for the welfare of these unique creatures.
The Lower Severn has a good head of water, and some big Barbel, it is unlikely pressure will be a problem here, in fact more feed helps, and there is always a chance of catching a Barbel that doesn't come out every week.

Sorry to hear about your recent illness, Neil. I suggest you get yourself pronto back onto BFW, as Richard Isaacs has assumed your position as resident know-all...

You must be easily pleased.

All, Neil has a valid point, the etiquette amongst serious barbel anglers dictates that generally, specific stretches aren't named. BFW is mentioned, it's pretty unusual there for a venue to be named in catch reports and such like. The original question in this thread was "chub with a chance of a barbel", which describes every Avon stretch from Rugby to Tewkesbury. The Nafford response was obviously designed to rile Neil.

As for naming other anglers on other forums whilst hiding behind an anonymous username on here, well...how very mature.

But yet neil can hide behind his name......double standards methinks Jonny boy........and looking at YouTube you have and named certain noted swims............but you think its harsh against Neil?

Re: Avon

Naming anyone is a rule breaker, the very reason I chose an alias is because of this very such thing. The irony is the worst offenders have multiple aliass and seem to go unchecked. However my points was naming stretches was not not ideal, but to name pegs is just not on, especially on small rivers, stretches. Perhaps some don't care about the Barbel welfare as much as others, but these rivers are under attack from many things, at least as Anglers we should not act like yobs on here?

Re: Avon

Johnny you talk about etiquette amongst Barbel anglers ? Is it etiquette to send 2 private messages to a certain Barbel angler on face book asking where a certain fish was caught ? Only for the Barbel angler who received those two messages to delete him from his list of face book friends ?

Their's a saying what comes around goes around ? People's actions will eventually have consequences which they will have to deal with ?

Johnny you say my posts are intended to rile ? Looking back over the years how many people have been riled by Neils posts ?

Perhaps when he decides to come down of his pedestal and stops riling people and stops acting like some keyboard warrior . Then I will stop telling people about Nafford ?

Re: Avon

Rivernovice you are one of many that Neil seems intent on starting arguments with.Brings nothing but trouble to this forum and should be chucked off in my opinion. Also it seems to me that Neil wants to keep certain stretches just for himself. What’s the harm in pointing someone in the right direction to catch a few fish? It’s not like a specific peg has been named is it?

Neil could be in a room alone and start an argument.......he's infamous for it all over the fishing forums.

Re: Avon

Wow... Seeing now Stu a BAA official now joins in saying I should be kicked off here...for what? Show me where I have broken any forum rules...and yet I have been abused, my name used, plenty of rule breaking there. I merely stated that naming stretches and pegs was an act of trying to ruin a stretch, which was admitted.
So put up the evidence?

As I said above, all you bring to this forum is arguments and you criticise anyone who disagrees with you.

So you have nothing? Because I might debate anything with you or anyone does not mean I am being abusive, its a Forum. I note you have been told by other members to wind it in too.
So put up or shut up!

So you have nothing then. So why did you chose to chip in and have a go at me when you cant back it up.?
I can find plenty of times you broke forum rules, perhaps you should kick yourself off here?
Couldn't make it up.

Re: Avon

Stu you were upset some time ago because of a Bailiff thread that questioned certain aspects of heavy handling by bailiffs. You made some pretty obvious threats to me, and in your capacity as a Baillif that was out of order. You fly off the handle and get very protective and abusive, its all there, but hey! it's your axe you grind it.
So show me where I have broken any rule?
