So - Here we are again. It's the "Glorious 16th". And guess what? The river Severn is 4 feet up and rising and there's more rain on the way.
After a three month lay-off, when the river looked in perfect condition, being used by walkers, canoeists, boaters, etc. We are told that wildlife and vegetation need this time to recuperate. What a load of bullish*t.
This happens year after year and anglers are getting despondent.
Oh well, I suppose I shall have to wait until the river returns to it's normal level before I can venture out. Perhaps I'll be lucky this year and possibly be able to fish the river 4 times instead of 3 - Weather permitting.
So now...It's time for progress. It's time for change. It's time to ABOLISH THE CLOSED SEASON!
Nuff said.
The Barbel Marvel.

Re: The Closed Season

Probably I am one of so many want this close season scraped cos we all pay good money to fish the rivers when they are not in floods wich is probably a qaurter of the season you can fish them.

Re: The Closed Season

TheBarbelMarvel makes a most pertinent comment, which I fully support.

The Barbel were still spawning on the R.Severn, up around Shrewsbury, a week ago! The close season is a Joke if it is supposed to protect wildlife, especially spawning fish, which we all know it doesn't as only coarse anglers are prevented from using the rivers at this time. Watercraft, game fishermen and farm animals probably cause more disruption to spawning fish if indeed they actually are bothered by such intrusions. I have stood and watched spawning fish come very close and seem oblivious to the presence of any bankside activity because they preoccupied by their biological urge to procreate and are intent on passing on their genetic make-up to the next generation without consideration to other outside factors in my opinion.
The other incongruity is the fishing for 'game' species during these months and also for eels using 'worms' as bait! It is reported that Salmon fishermen have caught Barbel and Chub on lures and flies (probably worms as well?) so adds to the argument to remove this archaic practice. Old school, traditionalist fishermen who embrace the close season are, of course, entitled to object to such claims but the evidence no longer supports their resistance.
Having said all this I doubt the EA and Natural England will be persuaded to abandon the close season unless an organisation such as the Angling Trust can put political and commercial pressure on them to reconsider their objections and change the law?

Re: The Closed Season

Totally agree with everything said. Once again we are left a river which is 2m and rising, with lethal slippery banks, just at a time when we are looking forward to the start of the season. Wasted weeks have passed by and now we have to wait even longer - I am sure tackle dealers will be suffering along the Severn. I expect we'll get the usual guff from the Angling Press regarding monster catches - time to abolish the close season on rivers like the mighty Severn, surely!

Re: The Closed Season

closed season was intoduced to help the fish recover from the norfolk broads flood which has happend a few time since also...they kept it going..however the broads are fine now...due to the amount of fish eating latley season is prolly best left as it is...reduce a few weeks maybe
