Don’t think it’s anything new
A long time ago Anglers used to heat by lighter the first inch of stranded wire and pass through a swivel twice and twist it up nice and tight, heating the wire makes it soft and easy to twist neatly,
I used to think it probably softens the wire so started crimping, but I’m no expert, just my thoughts.
