Re: Mythe Pool

Mate, I won't profess to know it all about this venue, but thought I'd get back to you in the absence of any other replies.

It's a difficult one at this time of year with temperatures up and down. If I were fishing that match I'd have 2 basic set ups - 1. Light waggler or pole set up with maggot for small fish, there's often a few small rudd or roach around. 2. A groundbait feeder set up with worm and caster or maybe sweetcorn on the hook for the bream.

If the bream show on the feeder then you should get a few and they're a decent stamp, otherwise it's probably scratching for bits. There's also a lot of tench in there, but not sure if they'll be feeding yet and if they do it's often early morning or evening for the tench.

The weed should be pretty much absent at this time of year, it only seems to get going around May/June time and even then there's lots of free areas.

Hope that helps, as said I'm not an expert on the venue. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi Rickb

If you are used to fishing the Commercials you will already know that the shallow end of pools, this time of year, fish better than the deeper ends because the water in the shallow end is always warmer than the deep end.

The northern (Ripple) end of Mythe Pool, from my one and only experience of fishing there, is no more that 3 or 4 feet deep most of the way across and the fish (including Mythe's illusive carp) are likely to have migrated to that end and will be quite active.

Best of luck when you fish it.

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi Rickb
There will be minimal weed if any this time of year. If there are only a few of you miss out the first few pegs. They are shallower and most probably clearer than a bit further down. A pole at 10 to 11 meters would be a good line it will be about 6 feet deep. Usual baits red maggots, caster, red squats and worms would be my choice. 4 balls of ground bait with caster and squat at the beginning of the match then drip feed maggots little and often, don't be scared to fish off the bottom. You will catch Rudd and Perch and hopefully the bream & Tench will move in. Luckily this lake does show a lot of fizzes when bigger fish move in. If you have 2 rigs set up now is the time to use it with worm or corn brace yourself for ells though.
No matter what you catch this lake is stunning with an abundance of bird life.

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi Tippers

I'm sure that Rickb will thank you for your advice when he gets a minute, in the meantime I'm thinking of paying Mythe Pool a visit myself as an annual Easter Weekend treat.

How many of the Ripple end pegs would you miss out to get into the deeper water to avoid the undertow that you get in the shallow end when the wind is blowing? That was a problem that I encountered last year on my first visit there, I fished the 3rd peg down (the bloke fishing the 2nd peg down got smashed by a Tench when he was legering so there were certainly some big fish roaming about up there).

Your tip about fishing OFF bottom was a good'n especially when the bottom layers of water are still cold while the upper layers are the warmest and where the fish have preferred to lie (swim bladders extended) over winter. I suppose that it's a matter of experimentation on the day as to how far off bottom you fish.

When a still water pool is really cold, fishing no more than 18" deep in any depth of water works, so long as you drip feed maggots little and often as you've described, and it can make for a great day's fishing on a cold and sometimes windy day. That's probably how those braving the Winter League pool matches keep warm - a fish a castsmiling

Re: Mythe Pool

Thanks all, good bit of detail from Tippers thank you.
My mind is made up, only thing will be i will be fishing a nice light waggler instead of a pole due to a shoulder issue.
Thanks again

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi again Rickb.

My money's on you winning the match then if Rudd make up the majority of the fish caught. While those using poles will have to break down every couple of minutes to land them (exhausting work), you'll be able to reel in twice as many as them without any effort, and from what I experienced this time last year you don't have to cast out far to get a shoal going.

Have a good match.smiling

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi Dill

What a cracking way to start fishing again after the first Covid 19 lock down and the consequential total ban on fishing from the end of March'20 to the start of May'20.

I recognise the one swim in your photos as possibly being the one where I caught dozens of razor Rudd and nothing else last year, but I was only fishing 4 or 5 meters out.

Well done and thank you for sharing your good day's fishing at Mythe Pool with us.

I am really looking forward to next weekend nowsmiling

Re: Mythe Pool

I’ve always found the middle pegs less weedy than the ends there are some quality bream to be had when they are feeding also the odd tench. Combinations of maggots, corn, worm and casters.
Good luck

Re: Mythe Pool

Morning Martin

I would imagine from the Booked Waters listed that Rickb won't be fishing Mythe until April 16th, unless he's had a try out of late.

I had a relatively unsuccessful afternoon there on Easter Sunday.

I parked up @10 pegs down from the top end and fished with maggots on the rod. The depth there was 3 or 4 feet deep in the side, ideal for dropping a keepnet into, and just beyond the tip of my 14ft match rod it deepened to @5 to 6 feet deep.

There was a strong drift flow set up by the south wind so it was hard to cast a light waggler out much further than 5 or 6 mtrs out and it was especially hard to loose feed accurately. I only caught a few Rudd. A few bights came after the rig had drifted back in to @3mtrs from the waters edge.

As the wind strengthened I found it easier to shallow up to about 5ft deep and cast northwards up the margin in the direction of the wind but only @2-3mtrs out. The bites were more positive there as the drift played little part in my presentation on what was probably bottom.

One of the Rudd weighed in at 6oz, a nice handful, but the others were @2oz.

Hard work for little return for me, but I did hear a shout of "Was that a Bream?" from a one of the pegs back up towards the top end of the pool.

Before the wind got so strong a few bubbles come up close to my float on occasion, that was when I was able to fish 6mtrs out, but that might well have been an eel.

Water Temp was 11.9*c by the way, still rather cold for Tench.

I met a bloke there who'd fished Nordley 3 the day before when three out of four anglers blanked and the fourth angler only had one fish. At least Mythe fished better than that.smiling

Thanks for the reply. Not usually an easy venue but lovely surroundings. The Rudd usually oblige though

Re: Mythe Pool

All this talk of Mythe has made me want to fish it on Monday. I know there's a match the previous day but it shouldn't make a difference It's just like pre baiting. It's a 140 mile round trip for me but as previously said the surroundings are stunning with excellent wild life. If anybody has fished it recently or even fishing it on Saturday a quick post on how you got on would be helpful.

Hi Rickb & tippers

So, its Monday 17th and in theory you have both spent time fishing Mythe since last Thursday's post on what is proving to be very interesting and popular thread that Rickb started.

How did you both get on?

Re: Mythe Pool

Hi Stew
Great day with a few fish too many Rudd maggots and casters weren't even getting two feet down in the water. Pellet ended up the bait with 8 Bream up to about 4lb and two Tench 2lb and a bar of soup about 10 ounces.
The Bream were showing signs of spawning which I think slowed it down a bit but neither the less a very enjoyable day at a very natural venue with a very friendly swan
Due to the wet weather the previous days the track along the bank has become very rutted and boggy. I parked the car at the top and walked as only 4x4 would make it. The problem is this only makes it worse.
Please forgive me for one moan, who ever fished the peg before me I took your rubbish home for you.
