Zander quest

I am a Zed virgin and have given myself a challenge to bag one before the seasons out.
I'm from Bidford, so right on the Avon, I keep plugging away (no pun intended) with some jigs and drop shot type lures.
Looking for tips and locations please. With my busy work and family life, I only get the odd hour here and there. I can't bank tramp it for hours / days / nights on end

Re: Zander quest

Never caught one myself but blokes have said some are at Marcliffe, which is probably where you fish being from Bidford, especially now the bridge is open again. Perhaps dead bait would work better, a sprat or similar. If no zander at least a pike or two should show up, I have had some of those from there.

Best of luck.

Lower Severn is full of them, Lower Lode, Wainlodes offer good bank side sport.

Hi bud have had them chasing fish at wick on the Avon pegs opposite the marina by the wire thought they were big perch until up close. Also Holt fleet on the severn would be worth a bash while fishing meat there I had 4 bites one after the other only to wind in with no meat or hook length couldnt believe it presuming zander!

Re: Zander quest

Thanks chaps, appreciate the friendly. I will give Marlcliffe a bash. The good thing is that I never see pike or perch as nuisance fish, just a bonus

Re: Zander quest

Hi Bud, I've had them follow small chub on the Island at Marcliffe on the lock Island, if no good there then try beyond there on the steep bank section where the water deepens, banks may be a bit slippery, so take it easy,
Tight lines.

If you wanted to venture a little further away, then I can pretty much guarantee to find you a zander on the Grand Union canal up near me in Solihull.

I'll be down your way on the Avon tomorrow though after some pike.

Re: Zander quest

Your best bet would be to have a look at the Lure Anglers Canal Club water - we have stretches of the Grand Union through knowle and then from Warwick all the way to and through Leamington...stuffed with zander and nice perch (very few pike).

Fish a soft plastic on a light (max 5g jig head) slow, slower than you think is possible and you will find zander. My preference is small shads or creature baits.

Good Luck

Hi, I have had quite a few now pushing to 8lb really pleased. I have joined the suggested club and looking for some more venues. Is the knowle stretch the place to head?

Cheers

Re Lower Lode & Wainlode

I think Wainlide is all day ticket? Even where the chelt goes in?

Who runs the fishing at lower lode?

I think it's syndicated Ezam, not quite sure. Onelastcast will know, his area.

Re: Zander quest

Wainlodes is now Smith's Industries upstream from the Red Lion, this is a good pred section, but to join the club you need to be sponsored and have to go on a bit of a'interview' process at their pond..I didn't bother.
Where the Chelt meets the Severn was a club water, I was a member a few years back, and for the life of me can't remember the name of the club, will dig around, they also had the 'beach' bit by the Red Lion which is a very good stretch, with Carp and all species including Barbel, it is more middle Severn in appearance and species.
Lower Lode.
This is day ticket. £5 or so, you can bivvy up. on the Cheltenham Rowing Club Lawn, and is easy fishing for access, level low banks and of course a lawn. Big Zander have come out here, and has all species, a good 'feeder' venue .DT collected on the bank.
There is the, the old slipway that you can fish a 'free', and not controlled by any club. Upstream of the Mill Avon is all Tewkesbury Popular AA.
Downstream of the rowing club is the old GUAA stretch, which is overgrown and never fished now.
If I were you I would fish the lawn.

Re: Zander quest

Thanks for the detail. I cant picture where you mean by the lawn. Are you able to show me on a map or PM?

Shame about Wainlode getting like that with interviews etc

Not even any day ticket opposite the pub?
