Barbel Fishing in Extreme Temperatures

There are large numbers of anglers taking advantage of the current weather to get out on the bank and judging by the number of feeder rods pointing skywards, many are targeting barbel. My view is that responsible anglers should avoid fishing for barbel in this extreme heat. There are a number of EA reports coming through of dead barbel below Shrewsbury and it would be naive to think that there will be no casualties on the middle Severn. I know many anglers take fish care seriously, but there is still a sizeable minority who will still insist on carrying the fish up the bank to be weighed and prodded and posed with for for the obligatory photo or six. Putting barbel in keep nets in this weather is of course lunacy. It is well documented that barbel stocks on our rivers seem in decline and we are quick to blame pollution, the EA, otters, poachers etc, but sometimes we as anglers need to do our bit and apply some common sense.

Agreed. Best to give it a miss this week, you won't catch much anyway, and why anyone would want to sit in temps of 30c all day is beyond me. Relief is arriving this weekend anyway, thankfully.

3 days of sunshine and people lose the plot.
Its not like we've had a heat wave like 1976 that went on for months. Its been a few days....... and last week it pissed down in Wales. I know, I have a caravan by Welshpool and the rain kept me awake all night.
Come on lads, be realistic here. The care comes in the return, not the actual capture

That's the problem, a lot of folk who don't fish for barbel regularly don't know about fish care. THey play a fish, net it, and the first thing they do is remove it from the water for unhooking and whatever else. You can get away with it in cooler temps, but not in this. The lack of oxygenating ranuculus on the Mid Sev isn't helping matters either.

Unfortunately you only have to see some of the photos and read some of the comments on the Facebook pages, some people have some very high and mighty ideas regarding barbel fishing.
It’s needs a few days of heavy rain to keep some folks indoors !!

Lol gb123.

I went out for a couple hours tonight, but because I'd booked a guest ticket in advance for my bro in law (not BAA water), not knowing what the weather would be.

We were planning on targeting roach due to the heat, but the water temp seemed cooler than I expected. No idea what it actually was mind. Anyway I caught one baby barbel and one about 5-6lb. As I'm stood in the river I don't go to the bank, I just keep the fish in the net and stand there mid river for 10 minutes or so. It means I can get the fish well recovered and ensure it s really kicking to get back. As per previous comments, I'm not too concerned with a couple of days of heat. If this continued for over a week I wouldn't fish, as I'd be concerned that despite the utmost care it might not be guaranteed the fish would recover properly. Can't legislate for the noddies though...

Christ on a bike!
I'm sick and tired of people who want to restrict the enjoyment of others and continually make petty little small-minded rules.
If you think it's too hot to fish for barbel, don't fish for barbel - but don't tell other people what they can and can't do.
If you think you shouldn't target pike until October, don't target pike until October - but don't tell other people what they can and can't do.
