Hi Johnson welcome to the forum . So you are looking to catch your first Barbel ? Their are loads of places you could try depending on how far you are prepared to travel . You could try Ripple or Severn Stoke . But the downside is you will blank more times than you catch . If you are prepared to travel . Then any where above Worcester is your best bet .There tends to be more Barbel the farther you go up the Severn . The Avon you could try Nafford , Fladbury , Salford Priors , Cleeve Priors ,Charlton or Cropthorne . Perhaps some one else has a better idea of where to go to catch your first Barbel . I mainly fish the Severn below Worcester and believe me it can be hard going at times .

Re: Barbel - servern/avon

In my opinion, at this time of year, conditions are key to catching barbel. Ideally warmer than average, preferably overcast and most importantly, a decent bit of colour in the water. As has already been suggested the lower Severn can be hard at any time of year.

All my best Winter catches from the Avon have been when it's at least 2ft above normal. Mostly on luncheon meat or Matteson's smoked sausage.

No fancy rigs, if they're 'having it' you'll get bites. Travel light and be prepared to try a few different spots. Last Winter I spent 2 hours at one swim without a bite, moved and had 2 big barbel in quick succession. Probably should have moved again, but stuck it out in case there were any more around.

Re: Barbel - servern/avon

Forgot to say, I live in Cheltenham and much of the Avon is within fairly easy reach for me. From Gloucester I'd try Pershore right bank or Pensham as both are a straight forward trip off the M5. I keep meaning to give Bredon a go which is even closer for you, but I don't think it's got much of a track record for barbel, more for bream.

Good luck!

Re: Barbel - servern/avon

I had this problem a couple of seasons ago and got pointed in the direction of Arley Harbour water worth the distance to travel from Glos. blanked 1st trip but soon worked it out & its been good every time I have visited there after. Id not worry with the lower or the Avon until you have some confidence in catching., But we warned its addictive!

I wouldn't label Nafford or Eckington as 'hotspots'. They're both hard venues from a barbel perspective. They're at Nafford, but not in huge numbers, and at Eckington less than that.

The fish at Nafford can turn up anywhere, from the backwater entrance down to the end of the stretch, as that's where the bulk of the flow is. There are big barbel to be had, but the place will kick you in the nuts plenty of times, I fished it half a dozens times last season, and had half a dozen blanks.

Re: Barbel - servern/avon

problem at mo is high pressure. 1032mb and that`s not good. not saying you cant catch but it makes it a bit harder.
i would say try Fladbury as well known for barbel. it gets rammed in summer but not too bad in winter plus always a chub or too .
i would also used a meat bait. spam. pepperoni, meatballs. and not bother with any halibut pellets. or make a cheese paste. blue cheese tops for chub...
and as for Nafford... its always been Naff for me . iv never had anything down there but never give up smiling

Re: Barbel - servern/avon

Problem is the Avon has suffered in depleted Barbel stocks, as have most rivers, but every stretch has a Barbel or two, you just need to refine your approach, probably best wait until conditions are in your favour, at the moment they are not, night frosts and bright days, not good. . Towards the end of this week look a bit better, with night temps about 6 to 7 C and some cloud cover. This time of year the Barbel are at their best as far as condition, so any fish will be great.
Fish late and into dark to increase your chances, don't loose feed too much, a bit of hemp and meat initially, and fish a chunk of spam AND LEAVE.... don't recast sit on your hands and wait for the pull round.
Something I need to remind myself to do all the time...

Johnson given the time of the year . It may pay you to invest in thermometer for taking the water temperatures . Any thing over 6 Centigrade and water temperatures have been rising with this warmer weather .So you may be in with a chance even through the day .. Be prepared for a blank . If you are going to fish Nafford try the down stream end . It some times produce's the odd fish .

For what its worth , I caught my first Barbel upstream of Pershore bridges. Good parking not too many folk good access and lots of variation of current and depth...…. its got it all. I'm sorry for the tardy response. but, dont get on the site very often.
