From what I hear, American Signal Crayfish are a plague in many UK rivers but I've never actually seen one, and other than a lot of mystery bite-offs, where the rigs came back with no hooks in one session on the lower Severn, I don't think I've ever been bothered by them on the Severn or Avon.
I know they are present in the Severn, so why don't they seem to present the same issues as on other rivers?

Re: Crayfish

Never seen one on the WA or Severn, perhaps the depths and high flows in winter aren't to their liking. Hopefully, I won't encounter one, but if I did, it will get the boot treatment. I've encountered them in canals before though, and at Moorlands Farm whilst match fishing.

Re: Crayfish

Not a reasonable response...surprise surprise,! Signal Crayfish are causing havoc and destruction to our wildlife, not least the white clawed indigenous species. Many rivers and lakes are carpeted with them, an alien species that needs controlling, nothing new there, unbelievable that you might not agree, well not really you are the Barbel God Troll after all.

Re: Crayfish

To be fair, I'd always put their absence from much of the Severn down to insecticides (sheep dip) being washed in in the winter.
I've no idea how accurate that might be, but there has been a distinct shortage of shrimps and other invertebrates at times when I've turned over rocks in the river - there are masses of snails though.

Re: Crayfish

I've fished the rivers of Eastern England often, particularly for the big perch around Buckingham on the Great Ouse, and red crayfish are extremely common - so much so that I rarely fish there except in the coldest weather (which puts them off). They prefer the slow-flowing rivers of the eastern side of the watersheds which divide Eastern England from the west, and, until recent years, have been by and large, confined to the east because of the watersheds. However I believe, like the zander before them, that they are crossing to the west, possibly via canals, such as the Coventry. I have caught half a dozen in ponds linked to the Avon at Stratford, and they have been netted (I am told) from side brooks. I think its only a matter of time before they are a nuisance on our local rivers. We shall know when we see perch with eyes missing - they hunt for the crayfish and can come off second best. Crays are disgusting vermin ------ Not like zander of course smiling

Re: Crayfish

Signals have been present in Dowles Brook and other Severn tributaries since the 80's.
That's what makes their relative scarcity in the Severn so odd.
