Re: Crayfish

I've fished the rivers of Eastern England often, particularly for the big perch around Buckingham on the Great Ouse, and red crayfish are extremely common - so much so that I rarely fish there except in the coldest weather (which puts them off). They prefer the slow-flowing rivers of the eastern side of the watersheds which divide Eastern England from the west, and, until recent years, have been by and large, confined to the east because of the watersheds. However I believe, like the zander before them, that they are crossing to the west, possibly via canals, such as the Coventry. I have caught half a dozen in ponds linked to the Avon at Stratford, and they have been netted (I am told) from side brooks. I think its only a matter of time before they are a nuisance on our local rivers. We shall know when we see perch with eyes missing - they hunt for the crayfish and can come off second best. Crays are disgusting vermin ------ Not like zander of course smiling

Re: Happy Christmas

Thanks Hadden, and a belated Happy Christmas to you. Also, may I thank all the bailiffs, bank-workers, office staff and committee, for keeping us all fishing, and all the members who are so friendly to we pensioner members. I was taught fishing by my late father in a mucky oily canal back in 1961, when to catch anything, even a five inch perch, was an achievement, but it was sufficient to get me started. I'm still learning and my sentiment is "If only I knew then what I know now, what a difference that would have made"

Happy New Year !

Re: Rubbish Nordley.

I've witnessed more litter too. I've had to clear two disposable face masks from BAA car parks along the Avon in the past two weeks. Not pleasant, but not things to let lie around. We must all ensure we uphold the good name of the Association. Beats me why anyone has to fish in a face mask !!!

Re: W/Avon Barbel record ?

I've seen a 15lb.6oz caught and weighed at Nafford, but in the sidestream opposite, so I could only gaze from afar. That must have been 6 years ago ? My personal best was from Offenham in 2008 (not BAA) and weighed 15lb.14oz. The same fish has appeared twice on the internet in pictures, each time at 16lb 2oz.. My research showed that this was the third best from the river at the time but I can't recall the bigger weights.

The aim is to be "A Son of Avon" being four species from the River W-Avon over 15lbs. I've achieved that in pike, carp and barbel, but I can't get past 13b.6oz on zander (ironically !!). I'm not sure if anyone has achieved that title. I'm still trying smiling

Re: Fish Care Barbel

May I join in ?

Rule Number one upon arrival - (a) ensure you are safely positioned - (b) make sure your landing net is put up first, and can safely land a fish without stressing it - (c) if you even think you might want a self-taken photograph, then set-up your camera and tripod / camera stick.ready

Only then tackle-up.

Remember "Fish come First" . Take a couple of pictures and put it back. Never, never, never should any barbel be put in one of those awful (should be banned) keepnet things, and my belief is that that rule also applies to chub ,pike, trout, grayling, roach, dace, zander, rudd………..and ……..and
