While fishing on the middle Severn last week,I had a bite clearly of a decent sized barbel, unfortunately the main line broke above the feeder,I was using 12lb main line so there must have been a weakness in the line.To cut a along story short I went back a week later, fishing the same peg and same area and I managed to catch my old feeder with hook link still attached which had been broken the week before.Lucky cast never happened to me before.I was using a barbless hook so the barbel managed to throw the hook.Has this happened to anybody else.

Re: Lucky cast

Not exactly, with a feeder but last week I was broken on the top of the hooklength fishing on the Avon which was very surprising and must have been due to an unknown weakness.

About 20 mins later I landed a perch about 12oz with my hook in it and was able to remove it.

Clearly hadn't put the fish off feeding.

Re: Lucky cast

New years day about 5 years ago, I had 2 float ledgers out with pike baits on. One bobbled and slid away, I struck and fairly instantly there was no resistance. Despite a wire uptrace the fish had somehow got the mainline in its mouth and it parted. Whilst setting this rod up again, about 3 minutes later, the other float did the same. This time the fish was landed. Not only did it have my other pair of trebles in its mouth, but it was (and still is) my biggest fish of any species, at 36,06.

Also while taking advantage of the quiet banks during the England game on saturday, which I have 0 interest in, I'd sent the float through a few swims for 4 barbel and half a dozen chub. I stopped off at my first swim on the way back to the car. It didn't produce first time round but it looked too good for that. I had a few trots and didn't do any good. I then somehow got a small tangle by the rod tip. One of those we've all had that wasn't major, but I somehow made it worse. I had to chop it all off and was ready to pack up. For some reason I thought I should set back up and have one last trot. That trot produced a barbel which was a definite double, probably over 11. I don't know why I randomly changed my mind to not pack up, but it was totally worth that 1 more trot.

I wouldn't catch anything if I wasn't lucky!

I also caught a fly reel (of course loaded with backing and line) from patshull years ago. I thought I recognised the gear, and when I mentioned it in the lodge it was confirmed to have been dropped out of the boat by a member the day before. He thought he'd never see it again, never mind the next day!

Re: Lucky cast

I've caught a few feeders previously lost by other anglers while fishing the Danery. More like unlucky casts on my part than lucky.
Your line was probably running through a snag when it broke so I wouldn't think that it was necessarily a week spot.
I remember blaming what I suspected must have been a double for smashing my 10lb line when I lost a Barbel once in a flooded peg at Hampton Loade. I went back to the same peg a few days later to try again because I'd never caught a double at this stage. This time the water level had dropped a meter or more and I could see sizable tree roots worming in and out of the bank just above water level and where the lost fish had made its final run on my previous visit. That would explain how my line had been smashed if it had been running at speed against those roots.
Would you believe it, my proof came when I hooked the very same fish again but it turned out to be a 7 pounder. It had two identical eyed hooks in its lip, both tied with the same Navy knot that I prefer use. Always a plus to get some lost tackle back, even if its only a No.10 eyed hook.

Re: Lucky cast

I wasn't to bothered about losing my feeder,I was more concerned about the barbel towing around a feeder and being snagged up in a tree root somewhere.Even though if that happened it would have got rid of the feeder because I was using a Korda hybrid clip, with tail rubber only slightly pushed on.But it was nice to know that never happened and the fish managed to throw the hook.
