New water - Retreat Farm Fishery

Just read that the BAA has taken on rights of this fishery so well done. I also note that pool 3 is yet to be stocked. Could we have some tench in there and less carp? Carp are everywhere and are often detrimental to the other species. A tench, crucian and rudd pool would be very popular I am sure. Especially, if it is stocked to encourage fish to grow to a good size. There seems to be a lot of interest on these boards for tench fishing so it would be a great opportunity to listen to views and put this in place. Feedback would be appreciated. smiling

Sounds a great idea,as soon as the level is sorted it will be stocked.Like you say I think an alternative to carp would be very popular.

Also while on the subject of these pools,I was going to start a new post about this. I did a bailiff check today and despite only being open a week some scruff had left half a spool of line on one of the pegs on pool 2.What is wrong with people? Is it really that much effort to drop a bit of line in your bag?No wonder the baa gets a bad reputation with idiots like this dumping line.

Pretty much the standard in summer on BAA waters to be honest Stewart as you know, disgraceful. Not sure how the problem can be tackled. Bans maybe?

The problem is actually catching someone in the act.I totally agree that any member should be banned for leaving any litter.Baa rules state that every member shall ensure that there is no other litter in the area they are fishing. So even if it's not litter you've left then you are responsible.

TBarbel get on just fine in stillwaters, they have done for years. Plus it will flood and there will be some left in the pools.

When did barbel naturally inhabit slow water, let alone pools. Leave them in the rivers. No doubt in a few years time they will be coming out with with their mouths ripped to shreds like the carp are now.

Not sure where I stand on the barbel.I always used to be opposed to them being stocked in pools but since seeing how they thrive if the fishery is managed properly I'm not so sure.Always going to divide opinion I think.

So stew is probably going to advocate stocking Barbel in ponds, well if nothing else you are certainly at odds with common sense...again.

What the hell are you in about?Have you actually read what I've wrote?I've just said I've never agreed with them being stocked into pools!!I then went on to say that they have done ok in some fisheries,do t make a complete fool of yourself time and time again by twisting what I've said.Seems you have some personal agenda against me,which is quite sad to be honest. At what point have I said I wanted them stocked into pools?

These pools are certainly too small for barbel but I have to agree that they do just fine in stillwaters In their native range and can be seen feeding in clear water in Lac Lucerne well away from any river.

Calm down Stew, I am concerned as I believe you might have some influence on the committee that you might advocate stocking Barbel in ponds. the Barbel is the last fish that should be stocked in still waters You seemed to be open to changing your mind...you said, in as many words,.
The reason I fish for them and many others is that they are by and large the pinnacle of coarse fish, they belong in rivers, that is their natural habitat, you just need to observe the shape of the barbel to understand that.

I am rightly concerned, especially with your views on Zander in Uckinghall,

Re: New water - Retreat Farm Fishery

Again have you read what I wrote? All you seem to want to do is start an argument. You jump to conclusions after not reading what I've wrote.I said I've always disagreed with them being stocked into pools so I actually agree with you!!I simply pointed out that in some well looked after fisheries they have done ok,probably haven't bred but they've remained healthy. So after making this point how the hell have you come to the conclusion I'm going to start advocating the stocking of barbel in pools?Utter rubbish, and again it seems anyone that has a different opinion to you is wrong.

Re: New water - Retreat Farm Fishery

As Stewart says, they haven't bred in stillwaters that they've been stocked into, and for that reason (in my opinion of course), they shouldn't be there. In the commies around the land, they're not long lived, and are the first stock to die off during algae bloom and low O2 levels. It's only a pond anyway, best to stick to carp, tench, crucians and the like.

Barbelgod, if you want to catch barbel, fish the river, a torpedo from there is far more satisfying then ANYTHING from a pool!
