Congrats to BAA on the new work restoring the bank. Great job!

Has anybody fished the pools at Apperley lately? Last time I was there, the water was incredibly green - must be some sort of algae. Has it changed and is it fishing well?

Re: Uckinghall

I have fished Uckinghall regularly for the last six years at least. In my opinion it holds better Bream and Tench than any of the other associations waters.Recent improvements to the track leading to the pool and repairs to the far bank are very welcome BUT these are overshadowed by a far bigger concern to me. I have it on very good authority that the recent work to the bank cost in excess of 50k.I have never in all the time I have fished there seen anyone fishing on that far bank but obviously it did pose a danger to any one walking round the pool. The biggest concern I have is the spread of the Lilies which are very rapidly taking over.At least 60% of the available pegs are unfishable and I would estimate that in 2-3 years the whole pool will be unfishable .Could the powers that be please look at doing something to check this growth before this excellent fishery is no more.

Re: Uckinghall

with regard to the far bank at Uckinghall, the combination of a narrow and high bank with the hedge directly behind,
made it very hard to fish. I did try it, now that the bank is wider ,I think it will be easier to fish and people will use it
especially if there are platforms provided. I agree with comments about Bream and Tench, and yes the lilys are
a big problem. I do not know how hard it would to remove them or to cut them back, but if BAA will organise it I am
prepared to help. Maybe other members would join in to. Its a lovely place to fish, lets try and keep it that way.

Re: Uckinghall

It is quite depressing regarding all the 'improvements' suggested for our waters, yes there are lily pads at Uckinghall, because as yet it is not a souless Carp puddle with no plants a full of muddy water and F1 Carp, whatever they are.
Lily pads offer shelter amongst other things, not least food for the stock fish, Oh! and it looks nice too. Learn to cope with these little inconveniences, it's fishing .

Cheers

So is it the free stretch referenced herehttp://www.dofreefishing.com/midlandlowersevern.html...

Apologies, my geography of the area isn't brilliant

Yes that's the one, second one on the list. Excellent safe platforms, and no reason at all for it to be other than promising for all species, especially Bream. Doesn't see a lot of bait go in so a campaign of feeding might pay off, must give it a go sometime.

Re: Uckinghall

Some who comment on here have obviously not visited this venue in recent times. The work on the flood bank (directly in front of the car park) was carried out by the EA.The repairs to the far left bank were carried out by contractors working for the association. To state that the lilies are a "little inconvenience" is a joke. Many of the pegs are completely unfishable. More and more pegs are being taken over.Obviously at this time of year their growth has slowed but come next spring they will continue to take over until the whole pool will be unfishable. At present they are starting to yellow and rot down and the subsequent gases will deplete the oxygen levels in the pool. If people think huge expanses of dense lilies is good for the pool then I despair.
PS. The EA do not have fishing rights behind the pool. The EA water begins about 100mts from the pool.

Re: Uckinghall

You can always use a rake if you want to clear a peg or two. The benefits of lillies might be an an inconvenience to some anglers, but they have huge benefits to the aquatic life...win win. Far better than a muddy carp hole.

As far as the bit of river behind the pool, it used to be BAA I believe, may have changed? However the EA 'free' stretch is there and waiting.

Chin Up!!

Re: Uckinghall

Take the trouble to visit the venue. Some of the dense banks of lilies extend 40 mtrs from the bank. Use a rake? you are having a laugh. The tons of rotting plants will not benefit aquatic life or the fish it will turn the pool stagnant and devoid of any life. Come into the real world.

I remember it being BAA, certainly was in the 80's in my early fishing days, I'm told that the Maddocks fish was from there (16-3?), back in the 90's, might be wrong though. Wouldn't mind having another bash it though, with my barbel rods.....once it rains of course, whenever that is.

Re: Uckinghall

Hi John,
The Maddocks fish has a number of different locations, even bumped into him once at Nafford, and he was a bit guarded as to where it was. Lovely guy though.
Never fished the EA stretch, but have walked it a few times, easy pegs which is a nice change for the lower, have you fished there? There was talk that the best fishing along there was when the barges were moored alongside.
Uckinghall Pond used to have some nice Grass Carp, I supposed they kept down the Lilly growth, think there gone now, my son had a big grassie first time we fished there, didn't fight until it was in the net. Good Roach venue, had some nice bags in the spring, and apparently fishes well all year round.

But yes desperate for rain, (In the Doldrums).

Re: Uckinghall

Mixer !! I wasn't advocating using a rake to clear the whole pond, just a swim that you might want to fish. The cycle of life will ensure summer plants get consumed by all sorts of water borne specimens that in turn the fish feed on, and so on, it's all complimentary really, only ever Man's intervention that put the knockers on things.

Re: Uckinghall

I fished it when it was BAA donkeys years ago. It was on a match, and was up a few feet, so was moaning then (it was before I morphed into a barbel angler). If only it was like that now. Might give it another try next month tho, rain permitting....I'm always up for a bit of lower severn action.......or more usually in my case...blanks.
