Re: Mirror carp @ Retreat Farm. Otter damage?

I honestly hope not, but I suspect not.

From what I have heard about otters they will make short work of a pool that size, there would be carcasses on the banks and I think they would be spotted with regularity. As they will remain in a territory whilst there is a food source and a half acre well stocked pool is like my fridge at Christmas.

I suspect a heron or cormorant with eyes bigger than its belly maybe.

Re: Looking for advice on buying a Bivvy

I have a Fox Royale Classic that I use for carp fishing and its been great. I must admit I don't know what its like at Birds Meadow but I have fished the Severn at Ripple and I would struggle to get it and the rods on the platforms there. Whichever one you go for two pieces of advice.
1) Look at the dimensions of the shelter compared to where your fishing and your kit (bedchair etc).
2) Test it in the back garden both going up and dismantling if you've never had one before.

I would definitely do a recce of the banks first and take a tape measure. Good Luck

Re: Boy's first pike

First of all, you are correct. Fish welfare must be the priority and that is / should be taught whenever a rod and reel is in the hands of a novice. In contrast though I am also pleased that a junior is obviously enthralled by catching the predator (albeit by accident, trotting for chub).

We need to encourage and look after the next generation as our sport (that I love dearly) will decline further and access to the rivers will become lessened.

Agree that we must protect our quarry at all cost, but lets also educate and guide the next generation of BAA members to do good and encourage that wonderment for the watery world.

Re: Re: Nordley Pools

I must admit that i often take such reports with a pinch of salt but I have also fished these pools in April and blanked. There were 2 other guys on Pool 2 who also didn't seem to catch. Now April is a tricky month, it wasn't especially warm and I am not the greatest angler ever. That said I saw only one carp "show". I am starting to wonder if there is some truth to this, I have also read the thread about otters. Otters would leave carcasses and evidence of fish being banked and eaten, I have not seen or heard of any of this. Poachers would not leave the evidence. I wonder if the BAA ever think about performing a netting to analyse the size of the stock?

Retreat Farm

Thought I would head to Retreat Farm since it re-opened and had a look at Pool 1. Spent about 5 hours there and banked 17 carp all between around 3 - 5lbs. Majority were taken in the margins on the deck with a waggler baiting meat and corn. I did set up a second rod and fished small 10mm boilies of various flavours tight to the island and had a couple of runs via that method. Its a small water and there seem to be only fish to certain size but lovely to get a consistent bend in the carbon and they fight like stink on lighter tackle.
