Re: Nafford above weir

If you park in the BAA car park or in the layby opposite you need to walk along the road past the private properties which block access to the river, the road bends sharply to the right and on the left there's a gated track.

If memory serves, I climbed the gates and skirted the private land down to the river. There's a public footpath on the bend but I'm not sure about access from there.

Not easy even with just a lure rod and a net!

You can park right on the bend if you fancy taking a look, enough space for one car.

Not easy even with just a lure rod and a net! Maybe I should have tried harder to open the gates, can't remember if they were locked or not.

Re: River Mease - Harlaston - 1 mile of water to stalk but take a machete to cut to Overgrowth

I fished that stretch 4 or 5 weeks ago, hadn't been there in years. Took a light lure rod and pulled out 6 or 7 small perch and had a tiny pike drop off at the bank.

The big hole to the left of the bridge, as mentioned above, looks fantastic but there are a lot of snags. I gave up after losing a couple of lures. I did venture down the steep bank at one spot near Harlaston village, looks to be mainly shallow runs.

Hopefully the undergrowth is dying back now, was over my head in some places. I don't mind a bit of jungle warfare but it was tough going.

I might try the Netherseal section again sooner or later although I don't remember many deeper runs. I do like the Mease though, I've fished a few other sections and had decent pike and chub.

Re: Which venues can I catch my first pike?

As mentioned above there are pike in most stretches - the key is to lure fish the slack areas and any cover close to the bank. I always target downstream slacks created by bushes or anything else that interrupts the flow.

If you use strong braid to a decent wire trace you're able to bend hooks out when you snag, which you will if you're fishing in the right spots!

The bit I enjoy is being able to cover lots of water with minimal gear, just remember wire cutters and long pliers or forceps. If you've not 'chinned' a pike before check out videos online, very easy way of holding the fish securely whilst it's unhooked. Crush the barbs on your treble hooks, way easier to deal with any awkward hook-ups.

During warmer periods let the fish rest up fully before release.

Re: Access Pensham.

Is the car park at Pensham easily found? Just looking on Google Maps and the BAA map it looks like the car park might be behind a farm building?

Assume it's vehicle friendly? Mine is perfect on the m/way but show it some wet grass or mud and it's game over!
