This would explain what I found further downstream a couple of years ago.

Re: The future of the BAA

The biggest problem with moving any club forward is having the people to help with it. The number of anglers specimen fishing has escalated over the last twenty odd years, but volunteers within clubs has also decreased massively.

I don't know how many Specimen Anglers are on the committee of the BAA to put views across, such as the night fishing issue. It may be that some river, or canal stretches are not available for night fishing because of the lease agreement. But those that are available, I think an online ticket system would be good.

A problem I'm finding in a club I'm involved in, is there's a lot of people have a lot to say on how a club is run, but few of them (or should we say 'none of them') will put themselves forward to help out. And volunteers don't take too well at constant criticism, and end up walking away, which also causes more problems for clubs.

I used to blame the lack of volunteers on the abolishing of the close season, as when June 16th approached, we used to be all so keen to find any excuse to get to the waterside, that we'd attend work parties etc, to be involved in our sport, and be able to chat about fishing and our plans for the new season. Being involved in the running of a club was very sociable back then. But the decline in volunteers these days is noticeable in all sports, and not just angling.

It seems the only way forward is to pay people to run clubs, but with this comes increases in membership fees.
