Re: Catching much?

Interesting responses guys, and struggles on the Severn seems a common thread. I suppose that one of the problems, and perhaps joys of river fishing, is that we don't really know what is happening beneath the surface and what is happening with fish stocks. Could be that there are loads of barbel everywhere, but not feeding or wising up to anglers' baits, or perhaps more likely, we are fishing for an ever-decreasing number of fish. Still, with no disrespect to anglers who fish commercials, I think I prefer to work hard for a small bag of wild fish, rather than hauling in 300lb of ravenous carp on a piece of carbon and elastic. Some of the commercial weights and catches are really crazy.

Catching much?

Hi - just wondered how members think the Severn is fishing at the moment? I know it is very low and clear, but talking to members and looking at a few reports, seems to be fishing very poorly. Bewdley Festival results seem to also suggest this. I've had a few nets of chub and dace on the float and a few pounds of perch and skimmers from Grimley yesterday, but mostly small fish and not much in the way of quality. Would have expected to have had a few bonus barbel on the float further upstream, but haven't seen one yet. Just wondered how other members are doing - my lack of success is probably is more a reflection of my skills and decision making than the state of the river.

Re: River venues car parking

Arley car park is not a BAA car park on left / east bank. It belongs to Arley Estate, who have sort of closed down the village. The whole village of Arley has self-isolated over the last few months, with lots of very unwelcoming signs warning walkers and cyclists to keep out, stating that the village is closed. Car park still closed last Wednesday and also noticed that the entrance to the right hand bank car park has had a big pile of dirt deposited across the entrance. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think either car park will be open by Tuesday.

Re: Birmingham Worcs Canal

All previous comments useful - agree that carp pretty well established, especially along the five mile pound south of Astwood Lock. Many of the carp are very long and quite thin and rumour has it that they may originate from wild carp stocks, although not totally sure. Comment on reeds is accurate, but you don't have to cast right amongst the reeds to catch. My tactic is to try and spot a few fish in amongst and by the reeds, watch for movement in and among them. Then feed a couple of balls of liquidised bread tight to the reeds but just in clear water in front of them, on the shelf before the water deepens, to draw fish out. Then a big gob of bread on a barbless 12 hook, direct to 10lb line, fished on bottom underneath a short waggler. Deadly - if fish are around they will find your bait and you have a decent chance of getting them out into open water as this is where you actually hook them.

Re: Where will you be heading tomorrow?

It's the canals for me - going to try and few old favourite spots on the B'ham-Worcs where I used to catch lots of carp. Been a few years since I last fished for the carp, but hope there are a few still around. No boilies or bite alarms, nothing complicated - loaf of bread, carp rod with float set up and a bit of ground bait or liquidised bread. Most fish I used to catch were in the 5lb - 10lb range, not monsters, but great sport and if you landed half a dozen in a session you would end up with something approaching 50lb of canal fish. Don't care if I don't catch tomorrow - being there will be enough.
