Re: Middle Severn float fishing

Hi - I float fish the middle Severn regularly, especially in summer. Usually, once the winter sets in I concentrate a bit further downstream. The BAA stretch at Stourport (Newhalls) is very good, even when the river is carrying quite a bit of water. Plenty of roach and dace to caster / maggot on the stick. I have also done OK a little further upstream at Ribbesford. Arley has some good pegs and decent head of silver fish which don't often get fished for - visitors tend to sit it out on feeder and pellet for barbel. I believe one of the better winter pegs for the stick is just off the slipway just upstream of the footbridge at Arley. As a general rule though, in winter when the river is carrying extra water, the deeper swims below Bewdley where there is a steadier current are best for stick float fishing at this time of year. You might find 9 feet + of water, so worth thinking about investing in a 15 - 18 foot rod. Good luck. Mick

Re: The Canals............

Hi - used to fish Birmingham - Worcs fairly regularly, mainly for the wild carp in the "5 mile pound section", although recently have switched to rivers. My knowledge of this canal is that there are the usual roach / perch etc, although not in the numbers you get on the Staffs- Worcs canal. However, there are plenty of bream and I used to pick up lots of decent fish when fishing a big piece of bread, hard on the bottom, over liquidised bread on far bank, when fishing for carp. Sometimes bream were a "nuisance" and often caught in 18 inches of water, tight to far bank features and in amongst rushes. This was with 10lb line direct to a size 12 hook, buried in bread for the carp. The bream are rarely fished for and not hook shy. The bay you talk about is very good for bream and I have caught them to ver 4lbs there, fishing caster / worm over ground bait. The canal overall is now rarely fished but there are lots of quality fish in there if you do your homework and seek out the feature pegs. You don' t need to fish usual canal gear with fine lines etc - go a bit heavier and you will find and land some quality fish. Good luck. Mick

Re: Stourton castle

Hi - Mick here - I am a river angler and live in Kinver nearby. Have only fished this stretch a few times - it looks spot on, but the reality is that it is a hard water. Upstream of the weir there is a steady flow and mainly roach, but you have to catch the river just right to catch. Quite often the river is low and clear and really hard to catch the roach unless you fish very tight to the far bank vegetation. When carrying a bit of water and colour it is al little easier. Sometimes it seems lifeless and regulars reckon it is linked to output from sewage works upstream. It's one of those waters which looks the business but you often end up scratching for just a few fish. There are much better stretches downstream, but you have to be prepared to do your homework and cut out some pegs to gain access. Tight lines - Mick Grove

Re: Stick Float Fishing

Hi - enjoyed reading your post. I've spent most of the last two seasons float fishing on the Severn and like you, I've had some great mixed bags. At this time of the year I tend to fish middle reaches between Bewdley and Bridgnorth, wading the shallow fast-flowing sections and fishing a "big stick" / avon type float and happy to catch anything that swims, including the occasional barbel. It's crazy that all the guys travel to the Severn from all over and then sit for hour after hour fishing the pellet feeder to catch the odd barbel (and often blank). Still - good news for us float guys as they don't know what they're missing. Tight lines

Litter

A message to the scumbag who, in the last 48 hours, fished the last peg in the first meadow at Arley Harbour, downstream of the footbridge. Today I collected all the bottles, carriers, paste and luncheon meat tins that you left behind and disposed of it - because you couldn't be bothered to. We cannot deny that our sport seems to attract a sizeable minority of morons who undermine the work of the majority and bring our sport into disrepute.
